3 Apps to Print from iPhone and iPad

Posted on May 19, 2010 at 5:08 am

One of the biggest questions raised about iPhone and iPad is about about how to print. Well, like everything else in the world, there is an app for that. In fact, there are several in the App Store.

1. Print n Share for Advanced Printing

print n share

Print n Share is the most comprehensive printing app on our list, as it should be with a $6.99 price tag. The app allows you to print to any WiFi or shared printer on a WiFi network, but not only that, but by installing the publisher’s Weprint software on your computer, you can print through your 3G connection from most anywhere.

Print n Share works with both the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. It will print most anything you can imagine, from photos to Word documents. Overall, if you are only going to consider one program for printing, this is the one to consider due to its versatility, publisher tutorials and positive user reviews. As a bonus, this app can turn your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch into a hard drive on your WiFi network.

2. Print Magic

The next best choice for printing from iPhone is Print Magic, which also sells for $6.99. This app boasts that it was the first program to allow printing from iPhone. Like Print n Share, it will print most anything, but with one drawback: Print Magic only prints on a select number of wireless printers from major manufacturers (the full list is here).

If you have one of these printers and intend to print only from your home or work WiFi connection, this is a good choice. While there are no video tutorials, there is a fairly comprehensive setup tutorial which should guide most users easily. If you have an older printer, then Print n Share is the better choice. There is a free test to see if this app will work for you. Search the App Store for Printer Test for Print Magic.

3. Print

By the same publisher as Print n Share (EuroSmartz), Print is the cheapest on our list at $4.99. It also uses the WePrint software, which can be installed on a USB drive when using computers not on your home or office network. The app’s biggest difference from Print n Share is the amount of tutorials available for it (next to none), and the lack of ability to show your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad on your network as a hard drive.

Outside of this list, if you have an HP printer, there is a dedicated HP printing app for photos. Search the App Store for iPrint Photo 2.0. It is completely free.

Another tip: When in a position where you need to print a photo or document quickly and are not connected to a WiFi network, you can always email it to yourself from your iPhone, then print from a computer.
