How to access Yahoo! Mail using POP3 for free

Posted on June 25, 2009 - Filed Under Free Software Downloads | 1 Comment

By default, you cannot access your Yahoo! Mail using POP3 unless you purchase the Yahoo! Mail Plus plan, which costs $20 a year. That’s not really a lot of money, but for those people who feel it should be completely free (like Gmail), here’s how to get around it.

Note that Yahoo! Mail Plus also has additional benefits other than POP3 access, which Gmail might not have, such as a 20MB limit for attachments, Email Forwarding, no ads on your mail interface, and no promotional taglines on outgoing messages.

Fotographix – Another free Photoshop alternative

Previously, I wrote about a cool Photoshop alternative called ArtWeaver and how I felt it was the best out of all Photoshop alternatives. I still believe that, but also ran across another program worthy of mentioning.

Note that there are other free and more powerful image editing and photo retouching software packages out there like PhotoFiltre and Paint.net. However, both require a decent amount of hard drive space and use up a good amount of RAM.

Free remote PC access and remote control software

Previously, I wrote about six free remote control and remote PC access software applications that work very well, such as CrossLoop, LogMeIn, and TeamViewer. However, there are still more remote PC support programs that have their plus and minuses.

Mikogo is a free screen-sharing and remote control program for both Mac and PC’s that I recently came across and found to be fairly mature in terms of the GUI interface and feature set.

Customize Windows Explorer using StExBar

Since Windows Explorer is used pretty much every day by anyone using Windows, it’s no surprise there are tons of applications and utilities that enhance its functionality!

Previously, I wrote about an alternative to Windows Explorer called Q-Dir and also about three free utilities to enhance the functionality of Windows Explorer. These are all nice enhancements depending on what you are looking for.

Another nifty program for Windows Explorer is StExBar. Kind of a funny name, but it lets you customize Windows Explorer in a very useful way. How exactly? Well, you can add your own custom commands to the Explorer toolbar.

Create persistent substituted drives (subst) in Windows

Ever create a substituted drive in Windows before? If not, the SUBST command in Windows allows you to map a long path, such as C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to a drive letter like Z:.

Whenever you click on the Z drive in My Computer, you will actually be pointing to the long folder path I mentioned above. Pretty sweet eh! This can be very useful on many occasions, especially when working with paths that are long than 256 characters.

DownThemAll is a Firefox add-on that you can use for quickly downloading hyperlinked files from any web page.  Previously we would need third party tools to do this, but now since it is a Firefox add-on, you can access the download accelerator from Firefox instantly.

To install the addon, go to their homepage and click the download button: http://www.downthemall.net/

To demonstrate how to use this tool, go to a page that provides direct downloadable content like Dave’s Trailer page.
