The good news: you can get all of that audio onto your computer without spending a fortune, and cassette digitizing has honestly never been easier, thanks to better (and cheaper) hardware and free software like Audacity.

In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to connect a cassette deck or USB cassette player to your Windows or Mac computer, set up Audacity to capture the audio, and export everything as MP3 or FLAC files you can actually use. We’ll also cover what to do if your laptop doesn’t have a line-in jack (which is most laptops these days) and flag a few common problems so you don’t waste a whole tape figuring things out.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, let’s make sure you have everything in place. The exact gear depends on which connection method you’re using. We’ll cover both options below.

Option A: Analog Connection (Standard Cassette Deck)

Option B: USB Cassette Player (Easier Setup)

If you don’t own a cassette deck, or you just want the simplest possible setup, a USB cassette player is the way to go. These are portable Walkman-style devices that plug straight into your computer’s USB port and show up as an audio input, with no extra cables or adapters needed. Brands like Digitnow and Reshow make popular models, and they typically run $20–$50 on Amazon.

A Note About Modern Laptops

Here’s something the original version of this guide glossed over: most modern laptops don’t have a dedicated line-in jack anymore. You might have a combo headphone/mic port, or just a couple of USB-C ports. Plugging a cassette deck into a mic-only input is a bad idea. It can sound distorted, noisy, and it’ll probably only record in mono.

If that’s your situation, you have two good options:

Use a USB cassette player, it handles the analog-to-digital conversion itself, so you don’t need a line-in at all.

Step 1: Connect Your Cassette Deck to Your Computer

If You’re Using a Standard Cassette Deck

  1. Turn off the cassette deck before connecting anything.

2. Look at the back of your deck for jacks labeled Line Out or Audio Out, these are the red and white RCA connectors. If your deck only has a headphone jack, that works too, but set the volume to around 30–40% to avoid distortion.

3. Connect your RCA-to-3.5mm cable (red and white plugs into the deck, 3.5mm end into your computer’s line-in or audio interface).

4. If you’re using a USB audio interface, connect the RCA outputs to the interface’s line inputs, then connect the interface to your computer via USB.

If You’re Using a USB Cassette Player

  1. Plug the USB cassette player into an available USB port on your computer.

2. Wait a moment for your computer to recognize it. On Windows 10/11 and modern macOS, most USB cassette players work as plug-and-play audio devices without extra drivers, but if your player includes a driver disc or download instructions, follow those first.

3. Confirm it’s showing up as an audio input (we’ll do this in the next step).

Step 2: Set Your Computer’s Audio Input

Before opening Audacity, you want to make sure your operating system actually sees your cassette deck or USB player as an audio input device. Here’s how to check.

On Windows 10 / Windows 11

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.

2. Under the Input section, click the dropdown and select your cassette player or audio interface. It might show up as “USB PnP Sound Device,” “Line In,” or the name of your interface (e.g., “Focusrite USB”).

3. Speak or play a bit of tape and watch the input level meter. If you see the bar moving, you’re connected correctly.

4. Click Device properties and set the input volume to around 70–80% as a starting point.

5. While you’re here, click Additional device properties > Enhancements tab and check Disable all enhancements if that option is available. This prevents Windows from messing with your audio signal.

On macOS (Ventura / Sonoma)

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.

2. Click Sound in the sidebar, then select the Input tab.

3. Choose your USB cassette player or audio interface from the list.

4. Adjust the Input volume slider so the level meter shows a healthy signal, moving well across the bar but not constantly maxing out at the top.

Step 3: Install and Configure Audacity

Audacity is free, actively maintained, and available for both Windows and macOS (including Apple Silicon Macs). The current version (3.x/4.x) bundles everything you need, including MP3 export, so you don’t have to install any extra plugins like you used to.

  1. Download and install the latest version from audacityteam.org.

2. Open Audacity.

Now set up your audio devices in the toolbar at the top of the Audacity window:

  1. Set the Audio Host: – Windows: Choose Windows WASAPI (more reliable on modern systems) or MME if WASAPI doesn’t work. – macOS: Choose Core Audio.

4. Set the Recording Device to your USB cassette player or audio interface input, not your laptop’s built-in microphone.

5. Set Recording Channels to 2 (Stereo).

6. Set the Playback Device to your speakers or headphones.

Next, set your recording quality. At the bottom of the Audacity window, set the Project Rate to 44100 Hz (standard CD quality). If you want a bit more headroom for editing, 48000 Hz works great too.

Then go to Edit > Preferences > Quality (Windows) or Audacity > Preferences > Quality (macOS) and set the Default Sample Format to 32-bit float. This gives you the best quality while recording and editing, even if you export to a smaller format later.

Step 4: Test Your Levels Before Recording

This step takes about two minutes and saves you from ruining a whole tape side. Trust us on this one.

  1. Insert your cassette and rewind to the start of the side you want to record.

2. In Audacity, click the microphone icon next to the input level meters to start monitoring (it says Click to Start Monitoring). You should see the meters respond to any audio.

3. Press Play on the cassette deck and watch the meters in Audacity.

4. Aim for peaks around –12 to –6 dB. Brief peaks near 0 dB are fine, but if the meters are constantly hitting red, your signal is too hot and will sound distorted in the recording.

5. Adjust the input gain on your audio interface (the physical knob) or the input volume in your OS settings until the levels look right. Then rewind the tape.

Step 5: Record the Tape

  1. In Audacity, click the red Record button.

2. Immediately press Play on the cassette deck.

3. Let the tape play all the way through the side. You can record the whole side as one long track and split it into songs afterward.

4. When the tape finishes (or you’ve captured what you need), click Stop in Audacity.

Step 6: Clean Up the Audio (Optional but Recommended)

Raw cassette recordings often have a bit of tape hiss and maybe some silence at the start and end. Here’s how to tidy things up in Audacity before you export.

Trim the Silence

  1. Click and drag to select the unwanted silence at the beginning of the track.

2. Press Delete or use Edit > Delete to remove it. Do the same at the end.

Reduce Tape Hiss

Tape hiss is that constant low-level “shhhh” sound in the background. Audacity’s Noise Reduction tool can knock it down significantly.

  1. Click and drag to select a short section of just hiss. A gap between songs or a quiet moment works perfectly.

2. Go to Effect > Noise Reduction and click Get Noise Profile. Audacity learns what “hiss” sounds like.

3. Select the entire track with Ctrl + A (Windows) or Cmd + A (macOS).

4. Go to Effect > Noise Reduction again and click OK with the default settings. You can always tweak the sliders if you want more or less reduction.

Normalize the Volume

  1. Select the entire track with Ctrl + A / Cmd + A.

2. Go to Effect > Normalize.

3. Set the peak amplitude to –1.0 dB and click OK. This brings the overall volume up to a consistent level without clipping.

Split Into Individual Songs

If you recorded a full tape side and want separate files for each track, here’s how:

  1. Zoom in on the gap between two songs (use the scroll wheel or the zoom controls).

2. Click in the gap to place your cursor there.

3. Press Ctrl + B / Cmd + B to add a label. Type the song name.

4. Repeat for each track on the tape.

5. When all labels are added, go to File > Export > Export Multiple to save each labeled section as a separate file.

Step 7: Export Your Recording

Once you’re happy with the audio, it’s time to save it in a format you can actually use.

  • MP3, Best for portability. Good for music players, phones, and sharing. Go to File > Export > Export as MP3. Set the quality to 320 kbps for the best MP3 quality.

FLAC, Best for archiving. Lossless compression, so the file is smaller than WAV but the audio is identical. Go to File > Export > Export as FLAC. Note that FLAC may not play on some older or basic devices (certain car stereos, older MP3 players, etc.), so keep MP3 copies handy if you need broad compatibility.

WAV, Uncompressed and universal. Bigger files, but perfect quality. Good if you want to burn to CD or do more editing later.

Alternative Methods: Skip the Computer Entirely

If the steps above feel like too much work, or you have a huge pile of tapes to get through, there are some easier options worth knowing about.

USB Cassette Decks That Record to a USB Stick

Several modern cassette decks, like the Teac W-1200 and Teac AD-850, can record directly to a USB flash drive as MP3 or WAV files, with no computer involved at all. You just pop in a tape, plug in a USB stick, hit record, and walk away. They also have proper Dolby B noise reduction built in, which is a nice bonus.

The quality is generally much better than the cheap Walkman-style USB players, and the transport mechanism is more reliable too. Less wow and flutter, which is the wobbly, speed-uneven sound you get from worn-out cassette mechanisms.

Cheap USB Cassette Players

If you just need to digitize a few tapes and don’t want to spend much, a $20–$40 USB Walkman-style player (brands like Digitnow, Reshow, and others) gets the job done. You plug it into your computer’s USB port, it shows up as an audio input in Audacity, and you follow the same steps as above. Simple.

Just know that the cheapest models can be noisy and the tape transport isn’t always the most stable. Fine for personal recordings, but maybe not for something you want to sound perfect.

Already Available Digitally?

Quick reality check: if you’re trying to digitize a commercially released album that’s available on streaming or as a lossless download (Qobuz, Apple Music Lossless, Bandcamp, etc.), you’ll almost certainly get better quality buying or streaming it than recording a worn cassette. Save the digitizing effort for mixtapes, demos, home recordings, and things that genuinely don’t exist anywhere else.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Common Problems

Problem: Audacity doesn’t see my cassette player or interface

This one’s usually a simple fix. Plug in your device before you open Audacity. If you plug it in after, Audacity won’t see it. Close Audacity, make sure the device is connected, then reopen it. Also try switching the Audio Host between Windows WASAPI and MME (Windows) to see if one works better. On macOS, check System Settings > Sound > Input to confirm the device is recognized at the OS level first.

Problem: The recording is really quiet or really noisy

If it’s quiet, make sure you’re using the Line Out on the deck (not just the headphone out at low volume), and increase the input gain on your audio interface or OS settings. If it’s noisy, you might be plugged into a mic-only input. Those are designed for microphones, not line-level signals from a cassette deck. Use a proper line input or USB audio interface instead.

Problem: The recording is only coming out of one side (mono)

Check that your cable is a proper stereo cable (look for two black rings on the 3.5mm plug, which indicates a TRS connector). Also confirm that Recording Channels in Audacity is set to 2 (Stereo), not mono. Make sure the plug is fully seated in the jack too. A half-inserted plug will drop one channel.

Problem: The recording sounds wobbly or the speed seems off

This is called wow and flutter, and it usually means the cassette mechanism is worn out, dirty, or just cheap. Try cleaning the tape heads and pinch roller with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab. If that doesn’t help, a better deck will make a noticeable difference. For severe cases, software tools like iZotope RX can actually correct speed instability, though that’s getting into advanced territory.

Problem: My laptop doesn’t have a blue line-in jack

Most modern laptops don’t. Your best options are a USB audio interface (the Focusrite Scarlett Solo is a great entry-level pick) or a USB cassette player that handles the conversion itself. Don’t try to use the headset/mic combo port for a cassette deck. The results will be bad.

  • Record the whole side first, then edit: Don’t try to start and stop Audacity between songs. Record the entire side as one long file and split it into tracks afterward using labels.

Save a project file before exporting: Go to File > Save Project to save an Audacity project file. This preserves your edits so you can come back and tweak things without starting over.

Clean your tape heads: If you notice muffled or distorted audio, the tape heads on your deck might be dirty. A quick clean with isopropyl alcohol can make a surprising difference in recording quality.

LAME is already included: Older versions of Audacity required you to install the LAME MP3 encoder separately. Current versions (3.x and up) include it out of the box. Just export as MP3 and it’ll work.

Organize and back up your files: Once you’ve digitized a tape, store the files in a clear folder structure (e.g., Artist > Album) with consistent file names. Keep your FLAC archive backed up to an external drive and a cloud service like Google Drive or Backblaze — tapes degrade over time, so your digital copy may be the only one left.
