Understanding NAS Bays and RAID

A bay is a slot that holds one drive. One-bay models cost less, while two-bay and larger models can use RAID to keep data available after a drive failure.

RAID combines multiple drives for storage or fault tolerance:

  • RAID 1: Stores the same data on two drives. Two 8 TB drives provide about 8 TB of usable space.
  • RAID 5: Spreads data and recovery information across at least three drives. Three 8 TB drives provide about 16 TB before formatting and system overhead.

How to Set Up a Personal Cloud NAS

This route handles most of the network work for you. Current consumer NAS devices usually provide a mobile app, a web dashboard, and automatic remote access.

Step 1: Install the Drives

You should be able to browse your folders while disconnected from home Wi-Fi. Avoid opening raw router ports unless you understand the firewall and certificate requirements.

  1. Open the NAS photo or file app on your phone.
  2. Sign in with your personal account.
  3. Open the app’s backup settings.

On macOS

Western Digital My Cloud

Western Digital offers My Cloud products aimed at centralized storage and remote file access. Available capabilities vary by model, so check current software support, mobile backup options, security updates, and compatible backup destinations before buying.

A simpler My Cloud model can handle basic household storage. Higher-capacity systems suit heavier backup and media workloads, but the exact feature list deserves a close look.

QNAP, TerraMaster, and Other NAS Brands

QNAP and TerraMaster also sell multi-bay NAS systems with browser dashboards, mobile apps, and remote access. Some models support containers and virtual machines, which is useful for running Nextcloud or other home-server software.

More options can also mean more settings to maintain. Check how long the manufacturer supplies security updates, whether remote access supports HTTPS, and how easily you can back up the entire NAS.

Seagate remains a major drive manufacturer, but its older Personal Cloud appliances don’t represent the current personal NAS market. Use current NAS-compatible drives inside a supported enclosure instead of relying on an aging appliance with uncertain software support.

How to Build a Personal Cloud With Nextcloud

Nextcloud turns a home server, supported NAS, or virtual private server into a private file-sync service. It handles files, share links, mobile photo uploads, calendars, contacts, and optional office integrations.

This path needs ongoing updates and basic Linux administration. Choose a turnkey NAS if you want the appliance to take care of those jobs.

The example below uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Nextcloud’s required PHP version and modules depend on the current server release, so verify its official system requirements before installing the web stack.

Step 1: Prepare the Server

  1. Install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on the server.
  2. Give the server a reserved local IP address through your router.
  3. Assign a domain or dynamic DNS hostname for remote access.
  4. Sign in to the server with SSH.

The server should be reachable through your local network, and its hostname should point to your home connection before you continue.

Step 2: Create a Non-Root Administrator

  1. Create a separate administrator account:
sudo adduser cloudadmin
sudo usermod -aG sudo cloudadmin
  1. Sign out of SSH.
  2. Sign back in as cloudadmin.
  3. Confirm that the account can run a command with sudo.

You should now be managing the server without using the root account for everyday work.

  2. Start and enable the web server and database services.
  3. Open the server’s local IP address in a browser.
  4. Confirm that the default web server page loads.

Package names can vary with the supported PHP release. Follow Nextcloud’s official installation documentation for the current list rather than copying an old package list.

Step 5: Create the Nextcloud Database

  1. Open the MariaDB or MySQL console as an administrator.
  2. Create a database and dedicated user:

  1. Replace cloud.yourdomain.com with your actual hostname.
  2. Select the option to redirect HTTP traffic to HTTPS.
  3. Open the HTTPS address in a browser.

Your browser should show a secure connection without a certificate warning. Don’t expose the Nextcloud login page to the internet until HTTPS works.

Step 8: Complete the Web Installer

  1. Open https://cloud.yourdomain.com.
  2. Create a Nextcloud administrator account.
  3. Select the data directory.
  4. Enter the database name, username, and password.
  5. Finish the installation.
  6. Configure an email address for password resets and alerts.

Nextcloud should open its file dashboard. Create a standard user account for everyday file access and reserve the administrator account for maintenance.

Step 9: Add Desktop and Mobile Clients

  1. Install the official Nextcloud desktop client on Windows or macOS.
  2. Enter your server’s HTTPS address.
  3. Sign in with your standard account.
  4. Choose which folders to synchronize.
  5. Install the Nextcloud mobile app on Android or iOS.
  6. Enable automatic photo and video uploads.

Upload a test file from each device and confirm that it appears in the web dashboard.

Step 10: Configure Sharing and Maintenance

  1. Require passwords and expiration dates for public share links.
  2. Enable multi-factor authentication.
  3. Install Nextcloud and server security updates regularly.
  4. Monitor free disk space and failed-login alerts.
  5. Back up both the Nextcloud data directory and its database.
  6. Test a file and database restore on a schedule.

A copied data folder without its matching database can leave you with an incomplete recovery. Keep both parts from the same backup run.

Use a 3-2-1 Backup Plan

A reliable personal cloud follows the 3-2-1 rule:

  • Three copies: Your working files plus two backups.
  • Two storage types: For example, a NAS and an external drive.
  • One off-site copy: Another location or encrypted public cloud storage.

A practical home setup could include files on your computer, a daily NAS backup, and an encrypted off-site backup. Many NAS systems support S3-compatible storage or services such as Backblaze B2 through their backup apps.

Tools such as Cryptomator can encrypt files before they reach a third-party provider. The provider stores scrambled data and doesn’t receive the key needed to read it. Keep the recovery key somewhere safe; losing it locks you out too.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Remote Access Is Slow

Your home internet’s upload speed controls how quickly files leave the NAS. A fast download plan can still have a much slower upload limit.

  • Use Ethernet: Connect the NAS directly to the router instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Check upload speed: Run a speed test from home and focus on the upload result.
  • Avoid live transcoding: Converting high-resolution video while streaming can overwhelm a low-powered NAS.
  • Reduce simultaneous transfers: Pause large backups while you need a video or big file remotely.

The NAS Doesn’t Appear on Your Network

  1. Confirm that the NAS and computer are connected to the same router.
  2. Reseat the Ethernet cable at both ends.
  3. Check the router’s connected-device list for the NAS IP address.
  4. Restart the NAS and router.
  5. Run the manufacturer’s discovery app again.

A guest Wi-Fi network may block access to wired devices. Connect your phone or computer to the main home network during setup.

Mobile Photos Aren’t Uploading

  • Check photo permissions: Give the NAS or Nextcloud app access to the entire photo library.
  • Allow background activity: Battery-saving settings can pause uploads when the app closes.
  • Check Wi-Fi-only settings: The app may be waiting for Wi-Fi before uploading.

A Drive Has Failed

  5. Replace only the failed drive.
  6. Start the RAID repair from the storage dashboard.

Don’t remove a second drive while the array is rebuilding. Performance may be slower until the repair finishes.

You’re Locked Out of Nextcloud

  1. Check that the server is powered on and connected.
  2. Test the Nextcloud page from your home network.
  3. Confirm that the domain still points to your public IP address.
  4. Check the web server, database, firewall, and certificate status.
  5. Review Nextcloud and fail2ban logs for blocked requests.

If local access works but remote access fails, the problem usually sits with DNS, your router, the firewall, or the HTTPS certificate.

Is Personal Cloud Storage Safer Than Public Cloud?

A personal cloud keeps the main data copy on hardware you control. That gives you direct control over accounts, encryption, retention, and physical access.

You also inherit the security chores. Weak passwords, missed updates, exposed ports, theft, and untested backups can undo the privacy benefit. Turn on HTTPS and multi-factor authentication, install updates promptly, and keep an encrypted off-site backup.

Public cloud storage remains useful for sharing and disaster recovery. A hybrid setup often makes the most sense: keep the main library on your NAS, then send an encrypted backup off-site.
