On October 29, 2026, OpenAI changed its ChatGPT Pro subscription in the ChatGPT web app. It doubled the “Work and Codex” usage included in the Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans — specifically that allowance, not ChatGPT’s broader chat limits. It also canceled a planned cut to the Pro 200 plan.

OpenAI says pricing for the three tiers stayed the same. That’s according to OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes and About ChatGPT Pro tiers Help Center pages, plus BleepingComputer’s report (all retrieved November 2, 2026).

Here’s the short answer to the question most people are asking. If you use ChatGPT Pro for coding with Codex or for bigger tasks in the Work tab, you now get more room before you hit the wall. If you mostly just chat with ChatGPT, this probably changes nothing for you. Your regular chat message limits are tracked separately, and nothing confirms they changed. OpenAI is also testing a version of ChatGPT that merges Chat and Work into one place, but that’s an early test for a small group. Most people can’t use it yet.

What Happened: ChatGPT Pro Usage Limits Doubled for Work and Codex

There are a few moving parts here, so let’s take them one at a time. (Subscription changes are a bit like airline baggage rules. The headline sounds simple, and then the fine print shows up.)

The Work and Codex allowance doubled on Pro 100 and Pro 500. Starting October 29, 2026, those two plans include twice as much Work and Codex usage as before, per OpenAI’s release notes. The release notes entry is titled “More Work and Codex usage on Pro and Business Premium Plans.” Android Authority covered the same change.

The Pro 200 cut is off. OpenAI had planned to reduce the Work/Codex allowance on Pro 200. It announced that cut in an email on September 29, according to the About ChatGPT Pro tiers page. That reduction is now canceled. Pro 200 subscribers on the lower allowance were raised to match the higher one. Anyone already on the higher allowance keeps it.

Pricing appears unchanged. OpenAI’s Pro tiers page lists Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 as the three plan names. We weren’t able to independently confirm each exact current monthly price from the sources reviewed. If you want exact current pricing, check OpenAI’s pricing page directly from inside your account.

A merged Chat + Work experience is being tested. BleepingComputer reports, based on an OpenAI email, that the company is testing a ChatGPT version that combines the separate Chat and Work tabs. The idea is that a normal conversation can flow straight into getting things done, like building a simple website, creating a presentation, or finishing a task with files and plugins, without switching modes by hand.

According to that report, the test is rolling out to “a small group” first, with wider availability expected “in the coming weeks.” We could not independently confirm that timeline through OpenAI’s own Help Center pages.

A shared allowance is coming later. OpenAI also says ChatGPT and Codex usage will eventually draw from one combined allowance instead of two. More advanced models and more complex tasks will use up more of it. OpenAI hasn’t detailed exactly how different usage types, including “Unlimited Instant” usage, will factor into that shared pool, and it hasn’t given an exact rollout date in the sources we reviewed.

OpenAI Help Center "ChatGPT release notes" page scrolled to the October 29, 2026 entry titled "More Work and Codex usage on Pro and Business Premium Plans," with the entry heading and the text about the increased allowance and canceled Pro 200 reduction highlighted

What’s the difference between the Work/Codex allowance and chat limits?

This is where most of the confusion comes from, so here’s the plain-English version.

  • Chat message limits: How much you can use ChatGPT for normal back-and-forth conversations. OpenAI’s Help Center treats weekly chat limits as a separate bucket. The October 29 release note covers the Work and Codex allowance and doesn’t say chat limits changed.
  • Work allowance: Usage for the Work tab, where ChatGPT does multi-step tasks for you instead of only answering questions.
  • Codex allowance: Usage for Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool. It writes, edits, and runs code tasks.

Think of it like a phone plan with separate talk minutes and data. OpenAI’s release note doubles the data, so to speak, and says nothing about the minutes. If you only make calls, don’t expect a difference.

How much more usage, exactly?

Nobody outside OpenAI knows yet. OpenAI hasn’t published the exact numeric Work/Codex allowance for any Pro tier. It only says the allowance doubled compared to before. OpenAI also cautions that a doubled allowance doesn’t automatically mean twice as many finished tasks. Usage depends on which model you pick and how complex the task is. A big multi-file coding job will eat more of your allowance than a quick script.

Who This Affects

Based on OpenAI’s release note, this update applies to ChatGPT Pro subscribers and Business Premium plans. This section focuses on the Pro tiers. Our sources describe the change in the context of the ChatGPT web app, though we couldn’t confirm whether it’s limited strictly to that surface. Here’s how it plays out by plan:

  • Pro 100: Work and Codex allowance doubled. OpenAI’s Pro tiers page doesn’t list faster “Ultrafast” models for this tier.
  • Pro 200: Planned cut canceled. If you had the lower allowance, you were bumped up to the higher one. If you already had the higher one, nothing changes. OpenAI’s Pro tiers page doesn’t list Ultrafast models for this tier either.
  • Pro 500: Work and Codex allowance doubled. OpenAI’s Pro tiers page lists Ultrafast models as available on this tier; we couldn’t independently confirm it has the single highest included usage of the three.
  • Business Premium: OpenAI’s release note title says the extra Work and Codex usage also applies to Business Premium plans. If your company pays for ChatGPT, check with your workspace admin for details.
  • Everyone else (including people on a ChatGPT Plus subscription): We found nothing in the sources we reviewed indicating Plus limits changed, though OpenAI’s announcement focused specifically on Pro and Business Premium plans.

So did Pro 200 get better, worse, or the same?

Better or the same, depending on where you started. It didn’t get cheaper, and it didn’t get the cut OpenAI announced back in September. If you were on the lower allowance, you got an upgrade. If you were already on the higher allowance, you keep what you had. Nobody on Pro 200 lost anything here.

What’s Pro 500, and who is it for?

Pro 500 is the top Pro tier. Per the About ChatGPT Pro tiers page, it includes access to faster “Ultrafast” models; we weren’t able to independently verify the specific model names listed there. It’s also the tier that received the doubled Work/Codex allowance alongside Pro 100.

That makes it a plan worth considering for people who lean on Codex or the Work tab all day and want faster models. It’s probably not the right fit for someone who mostly asks ChatGPT to rewrite emails.

How It Stacks Up

We’d love to show you a neat Claude vs. Gemini vs. ChatGPT table here. But we couldn’t verify any current pricing, allowance, or feature data for Anthropic’s Claude plans or Google’s Gemini plans that lines up with this update. We’re not going to guess. A comparison built on guesses is worse than no comparison at all.

What we can compare is the three Pro tiers against each other, using OpenAI’s own page:

PlanMonthly priceWork/Codex change (Oct 29, 2026)Ultrafast modelsSource
Pro 100Lowest of the three tiers (check OpenAI’s pricing page for current figures)Allowance doubledNot listed on OpenAI’s tiers pageOpenAI Help Center
Pro 200Mid-tier (check OpenAI’s pricing page for current figures)Planned cut canceled; lower allowance raised to match higherNot listed on OpenAI’s tiers pageOpenAI Help Center
Pro 500Highest of the three tiers (check OpenAI’s pricing page for current figures)Allowance doubledListed as available, per OpenAI’s tiers pageOpenAI Help Center

A couple of things stand out. First, the jump from Pro 200 to Pro 500 appears to be the one that adds faster models, based on OpenAI’s tiers page. Second, you can’t do real price-per-task math because OpenAI hasn’t published the actual allowance numbers. That’s a real gap if you’re trying to decide whether the top tier makes sense for you.

The Reaction

Reaction is still taking shape. The early signal we found is a r/ChatGPT thread about the change, where some users are skeptical. Their concern is that the future shared ChatGPT/Codex pool could eat into the gains from this doubling, since it merges two buckets that used to be separate.

That worry seems fair to us. Doubling an allowance you can’t measure, and then merging it with another one you also can’t measure, makes it hard for anyone to tell whether they came out ahead. We’ll update this story if clearer numbers or wider reaction show up.

What to Do Next

The good news is nothing in the sources we reviewed suggests you need to take any action to get the bigger allowance. It appears to apply to active Pro subscriptions without you doing anything.

If you want to be certain, check your account settings or OpenAI’s support page for confirmation. To confirm which plan you’re on, or think about switching, sign in at chatgpt.com and open the pricing page from inside ChatGPT. OpenAI’s Pro tiers article says that’s where you view or change your Pro plan.

As for the merged Chat + Work experience, don’t go hunting for a setting to turn it on. It’s a limited test rolling out to a small group, and OpenAI hasn’t said who qualifies or when it’ll reach everyone. If it shows up in your account, you’ll know. If it doesn’t, you haven’t missed anything.

Our Take

Who should care: Pro subscribers who use Codex for coding or run bigger jobs in the Work tab. For you, this is a straightforward win. Same pricing structure, more room, and no surprise cut on Pro 200.

Who can mostly ignore it: People who use ChatGPT for everyday conversations. Your chat limits sit in a separate bucket, and OpenAI’s announcement doesn’t say they changed. If that’s you, a Pro plan probably wasn’t the right fit in the first place, and this doesn’t change the math.

Should you switch to Pro 500? Only if you hit your Work/Codex limit regularly and you want faster models. Without published allowance numbers or a confirmed price difference, moving up a tier is something of a leap of faith. We’d wait until you’ve actually run out on your current plan after this doubling before moving up.

The Pro 200 reversal: It’s the most reader-friendly part of the news. OpenAI announced a cut, then walked it back. That’s good for subscribers. It’s also a reminder that these allowances can change with a single email, so it’s worth checking the release notes now and then.

The merged Chat + Work test: The idea makes sense. Going from “let’s talk about this” to “okay, now build it” without switching tabs sounds like fewer clicks for everyone. But it’s an early test with no public screenshots and no confirmed timeline from OpenAI itself. Treat it as something to watch, not a reason to sign up.

Wrapping Up

Here’s the bottom line. If you pay for ChatGPT Pro and use Codex or the Work tab, you got more Work and Codex usage on October 29 — not necessarily more of every ChatGPT limit. Pro 200 users didn’t get cut after all. OpenAI hasn’t said everyday chat limits changed, and the merged Chat + Work interface isn’t widely available yet.

Our honest take? This is a nice bump for heavy users. The catch is that OpenAI won’t say how big the buckets actually are. Combine that with a future shared allowance, and it’s hard to know exactly what you’re getting. Enjoy the extra room now, and keep an eye on what happens when those buckets merge.
