How to record yourself online using your PC’s webcam

Posted on December 20, 2007 at 7:05 am

Want to make a video recording of yourself online? Do you have something useful to say to someone? Something that cannot be expressed via a letter, email or phone call? Do they have to see your face to really understand what you’re trying to say?

Well, whatever your reason might be (want to record yourself singing), there’s a really simple way you can record yourself online using your own webcam and share it with everyone you know.

flixn

Flixn is a free web service that you can use for leaving video comments for your friends on MySpace or Friendster, for sending video emails, or for video blogging.

It’s pretty simple to use: connect up your webcam and turn it on before going to Flinx, then press the Record button to start your video message, do whatever you have to do in front of the camera (ahem), and finally get the embed code for many popular sites or get a direct URL link to your video.

Supported sites include MySpace, Blogger, eBay, LiveJournal, TypePad, and Friendster. You can also share the link via email to a friend or family member.

They also have some pretty cool partnerships, such as with Zoho, the online office suite. They are going to allow people to post videos into one of their online apps, called Notebook, which will be a tool for content creation, aggregation, and collaboration. The Zoho Notebook application will be able to recognize a link from Flixn and have it automatically load up in it’s interface! Nice!

Another really cool thing about Flixn is that developers have written plugins that tie into the Flixn API and allow you to use their recording technology on your website! For example, if you checkout their Developers page, you will see they have plugins for Wordpress, phpBB, vBulletin, punBB, so you can actually have people come to your blog or forum and record themselves!

Definitely a cool site and a very simple and effective way to record a video of yourself online without having to upload movie files to servers like YouTube, etc. Enjoy!

Very confusing title. Odd, because usually they are quite precise. This sounds like “Drive, using your actual car!”

I think something better would have been “Embed your recorded webcam content!” or something like that.

    Klein,

That’s a good point! hahaha I wrote this one last night at midnight, maybe that is why. Your title is good too, will come up with some change! Thanks!

    haha that was fun klein!.

Akishore: Pretty good service for people who want to have fun around.

But the only advanatge of uploading is you would have done some editing with it. Creating video with camtasia and adding effects wont be possible here

Well pretty good service when you want to quickly and easily share videos online. Atleast saves you the headache of having to upload the videos.

I agree with Keith, no need to upload videos all the time.

Ever tried to tell a friend how to do something on the computer? Most of the time, I need to share what I am doing in my PC, not just my face in a web cam or an instant messenger. Recently I found exactly that. The easiest way of recording and sharing videos of your computer screen that I’ve ever come across is http://www.uTIPu.com/ Records to FLV format directly; Desktop screen recorder “TipCam” has many hi-end features to optimize video for web delivery without any post processing custom to other products.
    Give it a try.
