How to convert a PDF file to Word, Excel or JPG format

One common question I’ve run across a lot these days in the office is how to convert a PDF file to Microsoft Word format (doc), Excel format (xls), or JPG picture format. Usually, people want to know how to convert a file to PDF, but it’s also nice to be able to convert back the other way. Converting to Word is actually pretty simple and can be done directly using an online file conversion service called Zamzar. Going to Excel or JPG is a two step process, but nothing very difficult to follow.

Update: There’s a much easier way to convert a PDF to JPG image format than the method I have mentioned below. Here’s how you can do it using Zamzar.com.

Convert a PDF file to JPG – Easy Way

Go to ZamZar.com, browse for your file and choose PNG format for the format to conver to under Step 2. PNG is another newer picture format that is slowly replacing the JPG format. Most programs that can open JPG files can open PNG. Zamzar automatically converts each page in the PDF document into it’s own PNG picture file. Now you can simply open Microsoft Paint (yes, all you need it Paint!) and choose File – Save As from the menu and choose JPEG from the drop down list of formats.

Convert PDF to JPG Format – Second Way

The first thing you’ll need to do is download a free software (the only one I could find) that converts PDF documents to JPEG image format automatically. Go to the Omniformat download page and download both Omniformat v8.3 and the PDF995 app. You will need to download and install PDF995 first before installing Omniformat. Once you have both programs installed, go to your Start Menu programs, find the program group Software995 and click on Omniformat.

The only annoying thing about this program is that it requires you to view some ads for about 30 seconds! However, it’s better than paying $20 or $40 for a program just to do a simple conversion! It does pop up another instance of your browser window for the web site of each of the sponsors, but it does not install any spyware onto your computer (no popup ads). Once the program is loaded, you’ll see it has a section called “Watch Folders” and then a button at the bottom titled “Start Monitoring” and “Single Pass“.

Basically the way it works is that you need to COPY the PDF files you want to convert to JPG format to the C:\omniformat\watch folder and then press Single Pass. The program will look in that directory and convert each page of each PDF into a separate JPG file. If you click Start Monitoring, you can keep dropping PDFs into that folder and the program will automatically convert them into JPGs as long as the program is open. Note that the program DELETES the original PDF document that it uses, so that’s why you need to COPY the PDF document to the watch folder, not move it! You should now see your converted files like below:

Convert your PDF to a Word document

Go to Zamzar.com and click the Browse button next to Step 1 and choose your file. By default, Step 2 will be set to DOC format, but you can choose to convert your PDF to other file types such as TXT, HMTL, RTF, etc. Type in your email address for Step 3 and click Convert.

You should receive an email within a few minutes with a download link to your converted file. I have tried out this service on some pretty complex PDF documents with text in multiple columns, multiple images, etc and have been very impressed with it’s conversion accuracy.

Convert a PDF file to Excel format

We will again follow the steps above using Zamzar, but this time choose TXT as the format you want to convert to. Unfortunately, you can’t convert straight to Excel format, so we’ll have to go through the intermediary TXT format. Once you have downloaded the TXT file and saved it on your computer, open Microsoft Excel and go to File – Open and change the Files of Type combo box to All Files.

Now you should see the converted text file in the list of files. Choose it and click Open. You’ll now be brought to the Text Import Wizard. You have to open the file in this manner because if you simply right-click and say Open With Excel, all of the text for each row will appear in the first column and not be separated.

For Step 1, choose Delimited from the two options listed.

Click Next and check off the Space checkbox as one of the delimiters. Each value should now be separated by a vertical line, indicating it’s going to be in a separate column.

Click Next and then click Finish. You can now save the file as an Excel file by going to File – Save As. There are a few drawbacks, however, as this conversion does not always work perfectly! For example, if the original Excel sheet had a column where there was text with spaces included, each word will be separated into it’s own column! Also, you won’t see any formulas or functions that may have been in the original Excel sheet, only the text.

It’s as easy as that! You can use many other image editing programs also such as Photoshop, Corel, etc, etc, but I chose Paint because that is universally available on just about every Windows computer.

Zamzar does not seem to work in converting PDF files in double-byte languages (such as Japanese) to Word files. However, the link posted in 9. by Saeba converted the Japanese text in the PDF file to Unicode text; however, there’s a 2-page limitation unless you become a member. Interested in other online services that convert PDF to Word. Nice tips. Keep up the good work!

Hey guys i know why it comes up blank when converted to word!
Right click the pdf file and click properties.At the bottom of the properties window the should be a security thing which has a box that is ticked. It should say that its come from another computer. Untick the box, click apply and then okay. Now try converting it to word.

Ja – Zamzar is good site for conversion of .pdf into .doc (Word) format. It is free also, although it does take a long time to receive converted files back from Zamzar by email. Have grown a beard by then! But free and good quality. Converted 26 page .pdf with table and colour – Word version came back to email – still could read table! Passed to the manager, he was more than happy!

Not the best for images. Coverted a pdf of a landscape image fine. In portrait, and the quality was poor when I managed to get it rotated.

I have a new computer with VISTA… cannot do much of anything since I was addicted to WORD and WORKS in the old computer and XP Home.

Can load/read pdf files from LightScribe DVD SuperMulti Drive/CD Writer, but need to make changes on them and cannot. How do I go about doing this? In particular a 4- page brochure which needs some updates and I need to do them pretty soon.

I am not really technically proficient here, so I need sort of easy instructions.

A simple way to convert PDF to any image format is….

1) open PDF
2) expand window until whole page is visible
3) press the Print Screen key
4) open Paint or any other image software
5) paste (Cntrl-V)

hey, i just used the zamzar free service and it SUCKS because of the following reasons

1- it takes 24 hours to get to you. so if you want to convert something today this is not an option.

2- your converted file is only available 24 hours so u better check your email every day.

3- quality of the conversion sucks. it is better and more accurate to use software methods mentioned in this article.

4- THEIR FREE SERVICE SUCKS. ITS HORRIBLE. DONT TRY IT!!

Using Zamzar will only convert pdf to word document as a picture inside the word document. There is no way to edit the text on the picture.

Another free program that you can use to change pdf to jpg is PDFCreator. Simply open a pdf file in PDFCreator and save it as a jpg.

The problem with using this option is that when selecting TIFF in advance, the pic seems to be in colour but the file can’t be opened by either Ms Picture, Viewer or Paint. When saved as MDI (in advance), it comes out blank and white, but at least it can be opened by these programs.
I tried saving the colour pic as .tif using MODImaging, it still can’t be opened by Paint. For some reason MS Picture opens it though.
Any ideas???? I want to convert my PDF to Jpeg so that i can alter it using Paint

This works only if u have a small pic you want to copy and it can all fit in ur screen. It doesn’t work for pics where u need the detail of a full page.

Both zamzar.com and pdfconvertor (freepdfconvert.com/convert_pdf_to_source.asp) converted my pdf and emailed it straight away.

zamar.com seemed to convert things more as an image with the resultant file being twice as big and not as editable. The converted doc was a lot more editable using pdfconvertor, e.g. the converted grids were draggable resizeable…

If there is an ‘owner password’ protecting the pdf (check properties and security) this will remove it (unless it’s a ‘user password’: http://www.verypdf.com/pwdremover/. It did it in 2seconds.

Then open the PDF file in Adobe Reader, ‘file’ tab and export.

I successfully converted pdf to word, but is there a way to get a clean copy? It looks like a photocopy. I need to do this in order to put page numbers….any suggestions?

You may try Nemo PDF To Word to test whether it helps or not. Any way I’m using it. The characters in the PDF are likely Unicode characters given particular places on the page. Since you want to copy the PDF content to Word, I think this Nemo converter may help, as it retains all the features of the original file, including mathematical symbols. Try to see is it true or not.

Is there some way to convert pdf file to excel WITH formatting – not just data? I’d like to keep the original layout of the pdf also in excel. Keep your comments extremely simple, please (not an expert here…)

Hi Sari, I currently do not know of a way to preserve the formatting when going from PDF to Excel. The technology is good enough to properly convert text, numbers and symbols, but I highly doubt there is any software that would be able to determine the exact type of fonts used or the colors, etc. However, you may want to search online and see if anything is out there!

Went to Zamzar.com and did the pdf conversion however when the file arrived via email, it contained a trojan virus so I had to delete it. would not recommend Zamzar to anyone if they can’t protect their products.

None of these crap programs work.Just as i suspected,free programs online are worthless these days!

People dont waist your time installing these programs,or even uploading them to ZAMZAR. I just waisted over an hour on this crap and got nowhere.Now i have to uninstall the 100 programs that require one single converion! What a joke!

Is it possible to insert pictures into a PDF file without first copying the PDF into a word document or JPEG? I receive PDF files from my company’s engineering department so I can add security cameras to locations for new building construction. I have pictures of surveillance cameras saved in my “pictures” section which I use to plot the location. Currently I’m copying the PDF to a word document but I loose some of the clarity.

If you want to convert the word or any other format like excel or power point etc to pdf,you can use Adobe acrobat writer.But if you want to conver pdf to other formats then you will need a pdf converter like “pdf to office(excel) converter”.

If your pdf file is perfectly aligned the acrobat should be able to identify the text and you can copy and paste your text into a word document. I know it works because I just did it

Thanx! It did work for me. The .pdf document was sucessfully converted into .doc, including all the portuguese accentuation and images. The .doc file was just TOO heavy (35MB), but I guess that’s secondary.

Nitro PDF Pro converts .pfd files into .doc, but only the plain text.

I followed all instructions for converting a pdf picture to jpeg, and all it did was to cut the picture in half, the other half cannot be seen.

You can also use Microsoft Paint. Simply start paint and choose File – Save As from the menu and choose JPEG from the drop down list of formats. The quality is going to decrease a little bit however it is a fast, easy way.
