How to revert back to Technorati links in the Wordpress 2.3 Dashboard

Posted on October 10, 2007 at 7:32 pm

Oh how I hate change! If you haven’t upgraded to Wordpress 2.3 yet, you’ll be in for a bit of a surprise! The new Dashboard in Wordpress 2.3 no longer displays incoming links via Technorati, but instead uses Google Blog Search! This would be fine and dandy for me if it still displayed your inbound links from other sites, but it now also displays your OWN posts as incoming links.

I have found this to be terribly useless and also impossible to really track who is linking back to me. Of course, Technorati has been having problems as of late and people are no longer looking it as the "best" tracker of the blogosphere, but it’s tracking of links between sites is a great plus. Eventually, I’m sure the Wordpress developers will filter out links from your own site, but in the mean time it’s better to have Technorati links from other blogs rather than your own!

With that said, you can download a plug-in created just for this purpose called Technorati Links Wordpress plugin, which will completely replace the Google Blog Search feature with Technorati again. In the first version, you had to enter your Technorati API key, but in version 1.1 all of you have to do is activate the plug-in!

Another nice feature about this plug-in is that you can configure the Blog URL so that if you have Wordpress installed at youdomain.com/blog, but you want to see all links coming to yourdomain.com, you can configure this option.

Enjoy your new links!

    I’ve been running it for about a week now and things have been going ok thankfully. All of my plugins worked except for WP-Cache, which for some reason is having issues. Hopefully that gets fixed soon.

    Nirmal-
    I guess it is not that safe to reveal that openly… :)

    Actually Shivaranjan, you should be careful because your blog actually openly shows which version of Wordpress you are running. I checked your source code and you have this:

    “meta name=”generator” content=”WordPress 2.3″ /> < !- leave this for stats -->”

    Anyone who knows how to perform advanced searches in Google can find blogs running specific versions of Wordpress and then hack into those. You’re at 2.3, so you’re fine, but it’s still very visible (even though it’s a META tag)

    Cheers!

    Nirmal, the comment is gone! ;) Hey, do any of you guys know why my picture from MyBlogLog does not show up for the MyAvatars plugin? Everyone else shows up except mine!

    Akishore-
    Any idea how to remove that thing from my blog?
    The technorati plugin is cool. I can now see the incoming links from technorati..

    Hey Shivaranjan,

    Yes you can remove that meta tag from your source code by going into the Theme Editor and choosing Header.php. You’ll see a line that starts with “meta name=generator…”. Go ahead and remove that entire line. I also removed a bunch of other stuff from my header including meta distribution, etc.
