Want more information on your Windows XP processes?

Have you ever looked at how many processes are running on your computer? Or have you ever wondered what all those processes actually do? Or maybe you think you have a virus and want to figure out whether or not you’re right?

Well, first you can view the current processes running under Windows XP by pressing the following key combination: CNTRL+SHIFT+ESC. Hold each one down as your press the other. Click on the Processes tab and you’ll get a list of all of the currently running processes on your computer! At the bottom, you’ll see the total number:

Here you can see I have a whopping 67 running currently! You can also click on the column headers to sort by CPU and Mem Usage. Your CPU Usage (listed at the bottom) should never really be higher than 5% to 10% while the computer is just running normally. Of course, if you’re running a major app or download movies, etc, it might be higher.

So anyway, if you wanted to find out more about each of these processes, earlier you had to search for each one in Google or something like that. Now there is a cool piece of software called ProcessScanner by ProcessLibrary.com. The software is free and tiny!

Process Scanner will:

1. Offer you a results page that lists all the processes found on your system
2. Give you clear, at-a-glance, categorized information on the task functions of each process listed
3. Provide color coded information on the threat risk on all processes – from safe to dangerous
4. Advise you what action you should take concerning the listed processes.
5. Share reports (reports stay on the server for 3 days or you can download it)

Install it and click “Start Process Scan”.

The scan will begin and takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It’s a little slow, but maybe it’s because I have 67 processes running!

Finally, once it’s done it will automatically open up your web browser and display the report. The report gives a very nice overview of all your processes and gives you detailed information on each one. More importantly, it tells you whether the process is safe or harmful. Luckily, all my processes were safe and a few were Unknown, but if a process is harmful, it will definitely flag it!

The nice thing about the program is that it tells you which processes are memory hogs and which are low memory users. If you find a couple of High memory users and you don’t use that application, you might want to consider removing it!
