Windows 7 Cannot Connect to Internet
Posted on November 16, 2009 at 5:10 am
Having problems connecting to the Internet on your new Windows 7 machine? Windows 7 is great and can automatically fix a lot of common problems related to connecting to the Internet, but not all!
The first thing you should try if you having Internet problems is to try and connect from both a wireless and wired connection. You first want to try and narrow down the problem to Windows 7, to your network setup, or to your Internet provider.
Here are some possible solutions you can try that will hopefully get your Internet connection up and running in Windows 7.
Method 1 – Turn Off Firewall/Anti-Virus Programs
One common reason why this problem occurs in new installations of Windows 7 is because of a third-party firewall or anti-virus program. Just to make sure it’s not that, go ahead and uninstall any of these types of programs.
You might be wondering why it would matter, especially if you have the same program running on another computer like XP or Vista. The problem could be that if the firewall or anti-virus program is not compatible with Windows 7, it can accidentally block connections to the Internet.
Method 2 – Install Drivers in Emulation Mode
So if you didn’t buy a new computer and are instead installing Windows 7 on a slightly older machine, you problem could be because of incompatible drivers.
You can fix this in two ways. First, try going to the computer manufactures website and download the latest drivers for your wireless card. Install it and see if the problem is fixed.
If not, it might mean you need to install the driver in compatible mode. You can do this by right-clicking on the executable file, choosing Properties, clicking on the Compatibility tab and checking the box that says “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and then choose the OS.
Again, make sure to run the driver setup program in this compatible mode to see if that fixes the problem.
Method 3 – Disable Protected Mode
The other reason you may not be able to connect is because of IE 8, which now ships with Windows 7. Some people have reported that the security settings are set such that they cannot connect to any website at all!
You can test this by going to Tools, then Internet Options, and clicking on the Security tab. Click on Internet and move the slide bar all the way to the bottom (lowest security).
Once you move the slider all the way down, click OK. Then close IE 8 and open it again. Try connecting to the Internet. If it doesn’t work, try unchecking the Enable Protected Mode option. Make sure to restart IE again.
Method 4 – Try Network Troubleshooter
If nothing else is working, you may as well try the built-in Windows 7 Network Diagnostics tool also. To run it, right-click on the Network icon in your system tray and choose Troubleshoot Problems.
It will automatically try to detect what the problem is and give you a possible reason and a solution.
Method 5 – Toggle Automatically Detect Settings option
Another thing you can try is to check or uncheck the Automatically Detect Settings option in IE. You can get there by going to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings.
If it’s checked, uncheck it and vice versa. See if that solves your problem. Also, make sure that the “Use a proxy server” box is unchecked.
Method 6 – Uninstall Network Card
You can also try to uninstall the network card from Device Manager and let Windows 7 re-install it on reboot.
Go to the Control Panel, click on Hardware and Sound, and then open Device Manager. Right-click on your network card and choose Uninstall. If prompted to remove the driver, click Yes.
Then restart Windows and the default Windows 7 driver will be installed, which might get your connection working again.
Method 7 – Enable/Disable Network Card
A simpler solution before uninstalling the network card might be to simply disable and then re-enable the network card.
Go to the Network and Sharing Center and right-click on your network card and choose Disable. Then simply re-enable it and see if this fixes your problem.
Hopefully, one of these methods will get your Internet connection in Windows 7 working again! If not, post a comment here and we’ll try to help!

I am also having the same problem in Windows 7 as troubledmetoo
Just installed windows 7 upgrade on my laptop. (from Vista) Seemed OK but on clicking to open internet explorer the computer crashes. Cannot get into tools on IE. Wireless connection is there as is access to Skype and Google earth direct.
Cannot get any free windows help as product key not registered. Any solutions would be welcome! Cannot see that this is common fault.

@TroubledMeToo – Can you give more information about your setup? Is this a new Windows 7 installation or an upgrade? When did you lose the ability to connect to the Internet?
Also, if you can connect to the router and ping it, the problem may not be with your computer. Are you using a static IP address by chance? Can other computers on the network connect to the Internet?
Thanks for reply akishore. This is home premium upgrade for vista on my laptop which is the only computer used by wireless. I have a desktop not connected to wireless hence I can access internet still.
I believe it has a static IP address. BT hub. Only failed to get internet on upgrade. Just clicking connect causes crash and return to emergency startup. Worked perfectly before upgrade.
I did a clean install on a Dell CP640 2.4g processor. I was running XP SP3 and now i cannot connect to the internet wifi or hardline. Please help.
If you’re running Eset anti-virus AND you did an upgrad rather than a clean install, you’ll need to re-install Eset. Otherwise, it will block your connection.
I am having problems connecting to any network…I’m using an acer laptop running with window 7…when I tried to use the troubleshooter, it didn’t show anything…I thought it happened when I installed Internet Download Manager..but i already uninstalled it and deleted the registry entries. Is it not connecting to the Internet because of something in the registry?
help me please…thanks so much…
No anti virus yet i need to connect to re-download Norton. Please help the wife is getting grumpy.
KG… thanks! Eset was the source of my problem. I am able to connect to the Internet.
Good topic! I had some Windows 7 machines at my office that were not connecting to the net properly.
I have to disable/enable my card everytime I start the computer in order to access the internet. I even installed a PCI net card I had laying around and the same thing goes for that. Any fixes for this?
I just got a new Dell xps 16 with Windows 7 home premium pre-installed. My roommate has a dell laptop with XP installed on it.
We have a modem connected to a router. I am able to connect to the internet but after an hour or two, it suddenly goes off. It just shows no internet access.
The connection still shows packets being sent & received but no connectivity.
Restarting the modem gets back the connectivity but it goes off again after sometime. Please help!!!!
I am using Windows 7. I’m only able to connect to the internet through Internet Explorer or some other programs that are built-in with Windows 7, like Windows Updater, but not all. IE 8 64-bit works, but the 32-bit version can’t connect. Those programs work fine, but anything else (like Google Chrome, AVG Updater, iTunes, etc.) is unable to connect. I have not made any recent changes that I can think of.
I’ve only had the computer about a week. The problem started two nights ago. There are no available updates that I can find. I turned off Windows Firewall and uninstalled AVG Free, but still can’t connect. If there’s any other information you need, let me know.
The problemhas been resolved. I had to open Command Line in Administrator Mode and type in “netsh
winsock reset”.
thanks for info on Eset software -after lots of trouble shooting for internet connection issues with win 7 upgrade uninstall/install worked great
Where can I find an AOL installation program that I can burn to CD to install on my new laptop with windows 7?
I too am having the Windows 7 Network (no internet) issues. I have a GYGABITE motherboard that uses the RealTeck Network Adapter. The problems starts when I install SOME programs only… if I uninstall the programs in question, the network and internet connection works just fine. If I re-install the programs, then when I re-boot, I have no internet again. I have to manually DISABLE the network adapter and then RE-ENABLE it and that seems to work but it is a pain in the ass to have to do this every time I re-boot. I created a shortcut on my desktop to make it easier but it still SUCKS!!
My setup is as follows:
I get internet service from Verizon FIOS. It comes into my house through a broadband modem/router, and out the back of the router, I run a wired network throughout my house. From one of the house jacks, I have connected a Wireless access point.
I just bought a new laptop with Windows-7 preinstalled … it will connect through the wireless access point, and I can network with other (windows XP) computers in the house, but it says I have no connectivity to the internet. Physically, the connectivity is fine … my other (XP) laptop can get out just fine through the accesspoint but the Windows-7 laptop refuses.
The diagnostic says the access point has no connectivity to the broadband modem, which simply is not true. Also, if I wire-jack the laptop directly into one of the spare jacks on the router, the windows-7 laptop CAN get out … Any ideas?
OKAY, after some more testing, it seems that turning off the Windows7 Firewall (at least just the PUBLIC Network setting off) seems to allow for rebooting with internet access. It looks like the program Suitcase Fusion and some others don’t play well with the firewall and something happens that disables the Internet upon re-boot.
It might not be your Windows 7. It might be your router/switch. By now most of you may of done so many changes to your Windows 7 computer, you may think about reinstalling. But before you do, check your router/network equipment and make sure the firewall/intrusion detection, etc is not blocking your computer’s IP address. You should either insert an exception or disable whatever it is that is blocking it. You might want to focus on UDP SNMP traffic.
I have tried all the suggestions found on this page with no luck at all. I have a pro-mac which workes just fine on the network and the internet, but my compaq laptop with windows xp pro and gateway desktop with windows 7 will not access the internet. they both will access my local network but not the internet. Do you have any more ideals to try. thanks, daryl phillips your local amateur radio guy in bakersfield, ca W6DGP
Thanks very much! Method 2 really helped me out. Unfortunately the HP website doesn’t offer Windows 7 drivers so I downloaded the XP one’s and used the emulation mode.
Thanks again!
Well I think one of these 2 things fixed my “no-internet” problem. RESET Internet Explorer under TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS / ADVANCED, RESET button;and also go to the START MENU RUN type msconfig, and in the general TAB checked the option for Normal Boot and then apply and reboot. (if it is already set to Normal Boot, click Diagnostic Startup, then back to Normal so that it lets you hit APPLY, and reboot. This somehow worked for me.
By the way, I originally did re-install Windows 7 and that was just a HUGE waste of time as the problem came back… but it is working now after my comments above… msconfig and reset IE8.
After I installed Windows 7, I haven’t been able to connect to my wireless internet. although it says there are connect avaliable 1 of two things then happen, it either says unable to connect or it connects and says no internet connection.
Im using windows 7.i have a prblm during connected to the wireless router, but its sometimes happen.when i connect to the wifi and it shown “3com, internet access” and i can surf to the internet.but sometimes when i try to connect to the same wifi but it shown “3com, internet access” n 3com 2, internet access” means 2 times.seems like 2 connection and i cant go to the internet.what to do is switch off n on my laptop wireless untill i got “3com, internet access” then i can surf to the internet.and it also happen to windows vista.TQ
I just bought a Windows 7 laptop. I got home, plugged in my ethernet connection (cable modem, works like a charm in XP) and “expected” Windows 7 to “just work” but of course it doesn’t. Can’t connect to Internet, cannot diagnose it’s own problems, can’t fix a damn thing. I have tried all the steps above but nothing has worked. There is no specific error msg, it just says “cannot connect to internet” and when I run diagnostics, it doesn’t produce any useful feedback or instructions.
I just upgraded my three year old mac to the latest snow leopard. Upgrade cost $30. I don’t spend hours troubleshooting and fixing issues. It just works. My time is too precious. Windows 7 is better than vista but you can’t polish a turd.
Macboy you are a piece of TURD… if you love your mac so much, WTF are you doing on a Windows Forum. It appears you really do like Windows so much that you actually need to spend time reading Windows ONLY forums. Get a life you douche-bag loser!!!
You win.
You can fix this problem by resetting the DNS cache
Type in the following command on your command prompt. You should be able to connect to the internet after that
netsh winsock reset catalog

Kumar
You will need to download fixit at the MSN site. I tried everything listed here and more. It seems fixit is not well advertised?
I had a similar problem with Windows 7 that I installed as an upgrade over Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium. I could not connect with either the wired or wireless connection. Though I was able to connect to my router. The only thing that worked to fix the problem was I bought a new DSL modem. Once I did that, problem solved, which was strange as all of my other computers, which run either Vista or XP connected with no trouble, just the Windows7 machine was a problem.
Just upgraded my toshiba p300 laptop to windows 7 after installation unable to connect to internet via wireless connection, cabled connection perfect, can see wireless connection but every time I try just says no connections available………..please help
bingo!!! anti-virus program (bullguard this time) was the source!!
thanks a lot!
Hi. I just got new Asus desktop and laptop with windows 7. My daughter did something to laptop and i decided to have it restored to factory settings. Again, thatns to her, i used wrong disk and installed decktop version instead. i want to fix it and am trying to use the correct disk now but nothing is working. don’t know what to do now
I have an Acer netbook with windows 7 on the network and open it the following message ‘Windows can not connect to this network’, if the network has a password and I know the password works fine (some open networks as well)
I cannot access the internet at home from my Windows 7 PC…the following message (the device or remote resource does not accept the connection) … please help .. thank you.
I, too am having the same issue of not being able to connect to the internet. I have tried all of the above and NONE has worked. I cannot connect via ether cable either. I have had the laptop for 2 months, and have been able to connect fine until now. I have the EXACT virus programs and windows 7 on my desktop, and it has no connection issues. I don’t understand why it had connections then will not allow me to go to the internet. No internet access although connected!
Hello,
I have a problem with Windows 7 64Bit. I was playing a game on the Internet when suddenly it just threw me off the internet now I get a message:
These files can not be opened! I also clicked on this message and nothing happens.
Also, when I go to the Network Center in Windows 7, it says there are no connections. Hopefully someone can help me.
Best regards
Deactivating and reactivating the network card in device manager in system in control panel solved my problem. Thanks!
I am staying at a hotel that offers wireless Internet Service. If I am lucky I might get a connection. I have complained to the owners over 100 times in the past 11 weeks.
It shows where I have local connection but not to the Internet. I try to get them to reset their modem and gee, that is like tying to brush the hair on a wild skunk.
I had to resort to using dial up which is so slow… my 94 mom moves faster then dial up.
It tells me things like disable the fire wall and I do and nothing .. I have had to set my brand new computer back to factory status 18 times now..
I don’t know what to do, and I am frustrated as I am not able to get my work done.
The network says ‘access point’ but don’t really know what that means. Half the time it says ‘unidetified network’ and I do not know how to fix that. Bottom line is I cannot access the internet via wireless. HELP!
Uninstalling and reinstalling the NIC in Device Manager worked for me. Thanks for the help!
I can’t connect to the internet at Windows 7.

Bom dia!!!

I’ve tried to disable/enable the Local Area Connection, but I cannot connect to the Internet. I cannot connect via wireless or via wired. The router is new and so is the cable modem. Not sure what else it can be.
I have a recently purchased Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 Professional installed. I could see it from My Macs but not connect to it, but from the Toshiba I could not see either of my two Airport Networked Macs. I tried various fixes given by various users on the Internet to no avail. I had activated Norton’s Security program that came free with the Toshiba for a trial period. I finally clicked on the Symantec icon on the desktop and in the window that opened clicked on network security. It was on ‘Protected’. Above it was another category, ‘Shared’. I clicked on that and immediately both Macs and my various printers showed up in the pane in the Explorer window and I could make connection OK. Windows Internet Security is currently Off.
THANKS!!! I can now connect to the Internet!
hi i had no ie8 connection wouldnt display any page took me four days till i use your Method 5 – Toggle Automatically Detect Settings option and it work thnx 10/10
I just received a new Dell Studio 15 laptop running Windows 7 last week and, like everyone else, cannot connect to the internet (sort of). When the laptop is wired to the router, no problems connecting to the router and internet. When I try and go wireless, I can connect to the router, but only a couple of websites (google.com, reuters.com, and codeproject.com). Other websites I have tried that DON’T connect are: microsoft.com, nytimes.com, usps.com, yahoo.com, facebook.com. I tried disabling the McAfee and Windows 7 firewalls – no change. The only thing that helped was allowing full access under the firewall settings in McAfee (that is the only way I was able to get to the 3 websites above…). Very frustrated! Couldn’t even do remote assistance with my brother (software engineer).
I am going to try the suggestions above, but any other thoughts that will help me get to ALL internet sites (not just 3) would be helpful.
Thanks,
Neil
I just bought my HP computer today, and I previously just had a HP laptop which worked well on the internet conneciton, I connect the same ethernet cable to the larger desktop with windows 7 and it did not work, i used another ethernet cable and it worked, I tried mix mathing it doesnt work, all it says is unidentified network, no internet acxess, and lastly during configuration it tell ms the ip configuration is invalid. what gives?! please help. is it my cpu hardware or software?!
Hey guys, I know that it was hard for me to figure this out, I posted earlier about this situation. The situation that worked for me was nothing to do with these solutions above, but what I did was I updated the driver of NVIDIA that I have on my system and I reset my modem by turning it off for 10 seconds and then turning ti back on and I restarted my laptop as well which then somehwere in that 30 second margin it fixed and I am not typing this solution on my new desktopt hat I had been working on for atleast 6 hours since I purchased the machine.
Update Driver via microsoft.com
Reset the modem by turning it off for 10 seconds or pressing reset for 10 seconds,
and lastly restarting any other computer’s connected to it
and now I have my laptop and desktop connected.
best of luck <333
Hope this helps anybody who was in my shoes.
THANK YOU !!!
virus protection – ClamWin did not get along with Win 7
Hey everyone, I was at the airport today trying to connect to their free wifi, which is completely unsecured. Windows 7 recognizes SSID for airport, connects to it, but does not give internet access. My windows firewall is turned off, using Microsoft Sec. Essentials for virus protect. Troubleshooting gives me doesn’t have valid ip”. When I did a ipconfig /all it gives a dummy 169.xx.xx.xx address. My wifi works great on secured connections or ones that have you go to a splash screen on IE and agree to their terms. This location did not bring up that screen and they are telling me it should just connect. Any possilbe solutions for this? Let me know if I left anything out…
I have an HP AllinOne running Windows7 Home premium and was able to connect to the internet via my Comcast cable modem up untill 2 weeks ago. Have not made any changes or added any software. Had Comcast in twice to check out the lines only to find that I can connect on my laptop using Windows XP. Took my Windows7 machine to work and was able to connect to the internet via the company network as well as a DSL connection. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong ?
I can connect to the internet with internet explorer, but i can’t connect to the server with realplayer 11 and itunes. Also mozilla and google chrome don’t work. what i should do?
If you did not get an ip connection it is because W7 is not updating and using an older ip address or just none.
If you go to bottom wireless icon and rt.click to “open network and sharing”, then select your wireless connection and click on ‘details’, you will see if you have an ip address or not.
To get one, above post may work or not. I have to reboot and use go back to earlier version. Pain in the a**. I am agreeing with the Mac post, even though my Asus is 2 mos old. MS should address this, but no word yet.
Here i would like to share some problems with windows7 professional. i have been facing problems with windows7 since installed windows7.
I got some problems with 7 below mentioned are:
1. Printer spooler problems ( Every time it disabled automatically without doing anything )
2. I.E problems getting every time when i open website it says diagnose problems and then it opens on second attempt after diagnose the problems
UPDATE:
Windows 7 took 30 minutes to finally get an IP address from Router upon booting up AND being away for a few days using other public connections.
No changes were made or settings adjusted.
To see W7 assigned IP settings: Ctrl Panel>Network & Internet > Netwk & Sharing Centr > Left click on your wireless connection located on right > click DETAILS tab.
I had no IP4 initially, and did HAVE IP6 address.
Windows was looking to connect without using my Router.
After waiting for 30 minutes or so, Windows changed to connect thru Router
Settings changed to IP4 – assigned 192.164.1.100
Default gateway: assigned to router: 192.168.1.1
etc.
Why is this not being done when the connection is first recongnized?
This is an issue MS needs to address. Please post fix.
We should not have to start troubleshooting or sending network commands to force an automatic setting to function.
PEOPLE!
If the methods stated in the article don’t work, try my advice. It is guaranteed to work for all versions of Windows 7.
1. Run Command Prompt as Administrator
(All Programs/Accessories/(right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator).
2. Type “netsh winsock reset”.
3. Restart your PC or laptop.
This will help you not encounter the same problem EVER.
Enjoy!
Problems in my windows 7 that need to be solved are as follows. Could someone please help me out of it?
My windows 7 has been working perfectly until today. Since my roommate changed the wireless password, I couldn’t connect to my home internet anymore (I tried to connect to others, and it works fine).
I’ve tried:
1. Uninstall Network Card
2. Enable/Disable Network Card
3. Try Network Troubleshooter
4. Reboot the cable/router
but none of them could resolve the problem.
Do I have to re-install my win 7?
Please help me.
Few days ago, I suddenly was unable to connect to inet via wireless network, using 2 laptops and one desktop.
I verified DSL working (hardwired to modem, using static IP able to connect). The wireless cards are receiving the normal strong signal, ipconfig reveals IP address starting with 192., so seems the router is working? That is my question.
Interesting point (maybe) – is that one on my laptops is for my work, I connect to my company via ATT Network Client. I cannot cannect to the internet until I establish connect via ATT Net Client, where I used to be able to before this ‘issue’. I am connecting via Local Area connection (hardiwred) – to the router (I never had used wireless on my work laptop).
Yet. I am not able to connect to inet hardwired to the other laptop/desktop via router.
I do not know what piece of this puzzle is the culprit and would apporeciate advice on how to figure this out.
Thanks!
Also, I am able to connect to inet using my Verizon mobile broadband on these machines – not sure if that is valuable information
Fix
Purchased new Dell computer with Windows 7 installed. Had problems getting on internet and once on would drop consistently.
TRied every thing found on internet to correct without success.
Replaced Linksys router with new Linksys router with complete firmware updates and all was fixed.
I have just tried your troubleshooting on connecting to the Internet. Got to method 6 and uninstalled the network card and all came out good.
Many thanks,
B
I have had Windows 7 for about a year now and for the first 4 months it worked perfectly. But for the last 8 months it has been horrible. It will connect to the Internet and then disconnect from the Internet after about 5 minutes and then it takes about 5 minutes to get it to connect again. I ran a Virus Scan and it detected a Trojan virus (which I then fixed and got rid of). That was about 2 weeks ago. Now it is acting the exact same as it did before I got rid of the Trojan Virus. I ran a Virus Scan again and it only detected some cookies (so nothing big) but it still has this problem and I really can’t do anything on my PC for that long because of this. I think this problem is caused by a virus but I am not 100% sure.
If anyone could give me suggestions or tips on how to get this solved I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.
When i connect to the internet in windows 7, it automatically download something that i couldn’t figure out. for that reason browsing speed is very slow. how can i stop those hidden downloads?
I had 2 Windows 7 PCs that would not connect to the internet via IE, Opera or Firefox, though all of these programs would connect to the internet using XP SP3. I found a solution – install and run “The World” browser – it works like a lite version of IE and works flawlessly with Windows 7: solved.
Windows 7 has been working fine for me, without any troubles, until now.
Then again, it might not be the OS, I am not totally sure yet.
I feel I have done everything possible to try and fix this on my own, and with advice I read on several forums.
Anyways, the PC I am using right now is running Windows XP and the internet is working (obviously< or I couldn't write this) and there are two seperate routers besides the cable modem itself.
This is how everything is setup, and had been working great until just a few days ago.
There is the initial cable modem itself, and from that I have a line that run to a router, and from there it goes to the PC I am now on.
There is also a second line that runs from the router, and it goes upstairs to another router, which is also wireless, and from there it goes to the upstairs PC.
Now, the wireless still functions just fine, but the upstirs PC, which has Windows 7, can no longer connect to the internet.
The reason is the usual “Doesn’t have a valid IP configuration”?
I have never had this problem before, ever.
I don't think the problem is the routers, because I have been using them without any incident, in the configuration I described, for many months.
I even did a clean re-install of Windows 7 and the problem still continues.
I had heard that Bonjour from iTunes has an effect on how the system runs, but I no longer have that installed.
Sorry this is such a long message, but the more info, the better off someone will be to give me some advice.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
=)
Internet was running successfully on my acer laptop(win 7).
But yesterday i installed mywin lock and after that laptop is connected but it shows no internet access. I have also uninstalled the same and also restored my laptop but still problem exist. plz help.
Have 2 HP computers purchased 6 months apart. One is an 11″ Netbook, the other a 17″ Laptop. Both with Win 7 Home Premium. The Netbook connects wirelessly without any problem as does an old IBM and the Nook. The Laptop refuses to connect. Works when wired. Keeps indicating that WIN 7 cannot connect. Connects with no problem to an unsecured network w/o a security key. Worked with HP customer services, no luck. Returned the Laptop for service, HP indicated that there was no problem with the Laptop. Security set at WPA2 as per HP suggestion. Have tried almost everything I can find. Have done 2 or 3 clean reinsatlls of the entire system. Nada. Using Verizon FIOS. It’s probably something simple but can’t figure it out. Noticed a few more suggestions that I can try but not very hopeful.
