Remove a Password from a Windows 7 Account
Posted on May 3, 2010 at 5:55 am
In the days of Windows 95/98, there were no separate user accounts; everyone using the operating system had access to everything on the computer. You couldn’t even secure your files or save your settings so everything was exactly where you left it.
Windows XP, Vista, and 7 changed all this for home users by allowing everyone to have their own account. You can use those operating systems knowing that your files and settings are secured within your account and behind your personal password.
However, if you are the only person who uses your computer or if you find yourself restarting your computer often, you may find it convenient to avoid having to type in a password whenever your Windows 7 computer boots up.
Be aware that if you do remove the password from Windows 7, anyone can sit down at your computer and gain access to your files, settings, and programs. Someone could even set a password on your user account and lock you out of your own files. Consider these issues carefully before you decide to remove your account’s password from Windows 7.
Remove a Password from a Windows 7 Account
To remove your Windows 7 password, begin by clicking on Start>Control Panel and then click on the Add Or Remove User Accounts link under User Accounts And Family Safety.
You should now be looking at a window that lists each of the user accounts on your computer. Windows 7 is asking you to choose the account you would like to change. Click on your account and Windows 7 will open up the options for your personal account.
Here you have several options from which to choose. Click on Remove The Password.
Before Windows 7 will let you remove the password for your account, you must first type in your current password. This is a precautionary step to prevent just anyone who maybe sitting in front of your computer and logged into your account from removing or changing your password. Type in your current password and click the Remove Password button.
Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not give you any indication that your password has actually been removed from your account. Therefore, you should verify that you no longer have to type in a password to enter your account by restarting your computer and clicking on your account icon at the welcome screen.
Keep in mind that even though your account is no longer protected by a password, you still have to click on your account name at the welcome screen to log in. It is, however, possible to set up Windows 7 to automatically login to your account.
Under some circumstances, it may make sense for you to remove your password from your Windows 7 account. Some parents who use just one account on their home computers do so to keep better track of what their kids are doing on the computer or on the web.
Still, there always remains the danger of just anyone sitting down in front of your computer and gaining unbridled access to your account, files, and settings. Someone could even setup a password on your account and lock you out of your own files and programs. Remove your Windows 7 account password with caution.
