Posted on March 30, 2010 at 5:25 am
This article is part two in the series 10 Free Windows 7 Firewall Apps. Here, we will finish up the compilation, listing 5 more great choices for free firewall software.
Zone Alarm Free Firewall
Zone Alarm is a veteran in firewall security. For the 20 something’s and 30 something’s out there, you may have even used a previous version of Zone Alarm, on your Windows 98/XP machine. “Back in the day man, Zone Alarm Free used to be the sh*t.”
Zone Alarm has had its ups and downs as far as consumer ratings. As the company started adding all of the paid programs that they currently offer, much attention and detail was taken off of the development of Zone Alarm Free.
Even so, the latest version of Zone Alarm does prove to be a good, free Windows 7 firewall software. Zone Alarm’s interface mainly relies on sliders, which allow you to set different levels of security, or “zones.”
Sunbelt Kerio (currently no Windows 7 support)
You may know of Sunbelt as being the developer of the popular Vipre Antivirus software lineup. Kerio is their free firewall app. Well, shouldn’t say free. The link above will bring you to a download page, where you can actually get a 30-day trial of the full program.
After the 30-days, some features will be disabled. However, the basic firewall protection should stay intact. This may make it an instant no for some freeware gurus. Either way, Kerio has received some of the highest ratings of all the firewall apps, making it a great choice for a Windows 7 firewall.
Privacyware Private Firewall
Privacyware Private Firewall is a full featured firewall, giving you many premium options, at a zero cost price tag. It claims to protect against viruses, malware, and spyware as well, making it an ideal free security suite. The majority of consumer reviews hype Privacyware Private Firewall as being one of the best free Windows 7 security options.
Sphinx Windows 7 Firewall Control
Looking to add some additional functionality to the Windows 7 default firewall? Sphinx Windows 7 Firewall Control does just that. Rather than being a full featured firewall application, Windows 7 Firewall Control adds a couple of settings panes, allowing you to adjust settings for individual programs, on a more in-depth level.
Although it not may be for everyone, Sphinx Windows 7 Firewall Control does offer more options that the built-in Windows 7 firewall alone.
Filesclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition
For most programs, the title “Professional Edition” means paid software. However, Filesclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition is an exception. A great choice for free firewall protection, Filesclab firewall offers one of the most unique user interfaces of all software on the list.
The overall look of Filesclab is a “Purple Windows Activity Monitor” like setup. Overall, Filesclab is a good software that has received some great reviews by consumers.
HandyCafe (added)
HandyCafe is a Windows 7 compatible firewall from Atles Software. They allow Windows users to download an unlimited, full version of their firewall software and use without charge. However, you do need to register with HandyCafe to get the firewall. It’s not a direct download.
Is there a different firewall program you are using with Windows? If so, let us know what it is in the comments. Enjoy!

Wow that’s crazy. When I get some time, I will try and remove these two firewalls and replace with some 7 compatibles. I didn’t have time to test all of them, just a couple. Sorry about that guys, I will update when I find two worthy of listing.
