Free Computer/Website Icons and Free Business Logos

Thankfully, there are many gracious people on this earth who have created thousands of high quality Web 2.0 icons and vector-based business logos so that essentially you really can start your own business and brand yourself in a matter of minutes. In this post, I’m going to go through a few web sites that I have found over time that I have used personally and that I feel are the best.
If you’re looking for free website icons that have that cool web 2.0 look, then there are two places that I frequent often, Crystal Clear and MaxPower. Crystal Clear has a fairly large collection of icons broken down into six categories: Actions, Applications, Devices, File Systems, KDM, and MIME-Types. The great thing is that it’s published under the GNU open source license and therefore you can use them without any restrictions.

Another nice aspect of these icons is that they have clear backgrounds (hence the name Crystal Clear), meaning that the icon will blend in with any background on your web page! These are also very high quality icons, most of them are 128×128 pixels, so you can use them for anything from large icons on your desktop to the tiny icons you see in the address bar of some web sites.
The MaxPower blog has created a list of about 60 web sites where you can find even more high quality Web 2.0 icons. This list, however, also has links to sites that have icons for Mac, FireFox, and Linux. You might find these more useful if you’re not working on a Windows platform.

I’m pretty sure anyone can find the exact icon they are looking for from these sites alone, it’s a huge collection of icons. Once you have found your icons, maybe you’ll be looking for logos to try out on your new site? That’s an easy one also!
BestCompanyLogo is a logo designing company that also has about 150 logos that they give away for free. They also split there logos into about 36 categories ranging from Technology to Photography. The site also regularly adds logos to the free collection, so check back every once in a while if you don’t find something that catches your eye.

All of the files are in .EPS format, so you can open them in Adobe Illustrator and change the text to your company name and tag line. And finally, now that you have icons and logos, you will want cool-looking vector buttons also! Check out GoSquared and you’ll find a bunch of buttons that you can use for RSS, OK, Next, Browse, etc.

If you know of any more cool places to find icons, buttons, or logos that are free, please leave a comment! Thanks!
