Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes

MR-SEO goes through a list of mistakes that people make when they make their web sites, thinking that it will help them get listed higher in Google search results, but actually ends up getting them banned and put into the Google Supplemental Index.

Here are a couple of hints about how to optimize your web site for the Google search engine:

1. Do not put keywords into the TITLE, DESCRIPTION and KEYWORDS meta tags. Only put keywords in the keywords meta tag. Putting them into all of the tags will be bad for your site.

2. Do not use the same keyword more than 3 times in any meta tag. Putting the same keyword over and over again will tell the Google bot to shy away from your page.

3. Do not use the same keywords for every single page on your site. You should have keywords in the meta tag for each page’s unique content. The Google bot will not index all of your pages if you use the same keywords on different pages.

4. Try not to use Flash for menus and content. The Google bot can only index text and HTML, so anything in Flash will not even be looked at.

5. Do not engage in link sharing unless the links are related to your site. Linking to all kinds of random stuff will DEFINITELY get you banned by the Google bot. The links should be closely related to your site content. Make sure the sites you link too are good sites, otherwise the links coming into your site will actually hurt you!

6. Do not have lots of links on one page. Too many links on a page can cause the Google bot to think your site is trying to do something else.

7. Create an HMTL or XML site map for your site. If your site has no clear structure, the Google bot will be less likely to index all of your pages or give you a higher PageRank.
