Whats new in VLC 0.9 media player

Last June 2008 we have written about the free media player called VLC from VideoLan.org. At version 0.9 it still is obviously in its Beta stage but the software already took a great leap since just a few months ago.
The player now have a better interface but it maintained its simplistic and natural feel.
Improvements to the playlist and the extended settings can be easily spotted by long time VLC users. The controls are now at the lower part of the screen instead of coming from a pull down menu:
The playlist has greatly improved. Now you can directly import from files and directories just like what Winamp and Windows Media Player does.
A search filter is also located at the lower part of the window. Just enter a few keywords to the search filter to see all of your media with a matching keywords.
The graphic equalizer now has a “2 Pass” option that will let you process the sound twice with the equalizer.
The spatializer when enabled lets you simulate room size and humidity. This is helpful for folks who want to experience artificial widening effects.
A number of video playing effects are also available. One of the things I like in particular is the video magnification that lets you see a small version of the video on the upper left hand with a rectangular cursor that you can move around to see the magnified version on the main screen.

The effects to both audio and video playback are a significant leap from the earlier versions. If you still have the old version of VLC, now is definitely the time for the upgrade.
Ben Carigtan shows you how it’s done.
