Recently, I wrote about Microsoft FolderShare, a freeware program that you could use to automatically backup/replicate your data from one computer to another. It’s a great tool to quickly transfer, share, or sync files and folders between Windows or Mac computer across the Internet, however, one issue that I encountered which led me to stop using it was the fact that it only supported up to 10,000 files in a directory.
Unfortunately, my pictures folder that I wanted to sync with another computer had well over 20,000 photos and therefore could not be synchronized. I ended up searching and found out about another program that uses an advanced synchronization method to allow users to synchronize data between desktops, laptops, and even USB drives without any file restrictions.
Allway Sync was the solution for me and it works exceptionally well! It’s free for personal use and has a bunch of great features including:
-
Advanced synchronization options: keep two folders as exact copies of one another or create a sync where one folder derives from another folder based on criteria, i.e. synchronize only the images in a particular folder, etc.
-
Implements true all-way synchronization (two-way, three-way). Uses standard file system services and does not rely on hooks, system injections, drivers, etc, which makes it usable on most Windows operating systems.
-
Ability to synchronize data other than simple files and folders such as registry keys, database records, email messages, contacts, playlists, etc.
-
Supports just about all file systems including FAT, NTFS, SAMBA, Netware, X-Drive, CDFS, UDF and more.
Here are a couple of common uses that you might want to check out Allway Sync:
- Sync data between your desktop computer and laptop notebook
- Replicate and backup data between a home computer and an office computer
- Synchronize more than two directories at the same time.
- Update or backup files over a LAN or over the Internet.
- Synchronize removable devices including USB drives, CDRW’s with a local hard drive.
AllSync is a true all-way sync tool meaning that if you delete a file in any folder, it will be deleted in any synced folders. You can also turn this off in the options when you are setting up a new sync set.
Overall, I liked Allway Sync more than FolderShare because it does not have that annoying 10,000 limit! Any other file synchronization software you use that is better than both of these? Post a comment! Enjoy!
