Undelete Plus – Free file recovery software

Posted on November 17, 2008 at 5:24 am

Losing data because you accidentally deleted a folder or files has to be the worst way to lose your files. If you’ve ever deleted photos or important documents by accident, like I have, you probably have cursed yourself for days.

Luckily, when you delete a file in Windows, it doesn’t actually over write the data on the hard disk immediately, it simply erases the reference to that data as if it never existed. This is good because it means if you can somehow find that data before it gets overridden, you might be able to recover it.

Earlier I wrote about a free program to recover deleted photos and a free program to recover deleted files. However, since each recovery program works differently, it’s a pretty good idea to try several file recovery programs before giving up hope!

Undelete Plus is powerful file recovery and hard drive recovery software that is usually not free. For a limited time (from their website), they are releasing the program for free! Even if you don’t have any reason to use this program right now, it’s probably a good idea to download it since they are giving it away from free for a little while.

Undelete Plus can recover files deleted by emptying the recycle bin, files deleted via a DOS window, files deleted by pressing SHIFT + DEL, etc. Undelete Plus has a better chance of recovering your deleted files the earlier you run the program to the time you actually deleted the files.

It works with a whole host of media and formats including FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, and NTFS5. It can even recovery deleted pictures from compact flash cards, SmartMedia, secure digital cards, and even USB flash sticks.

To get started using Undelete Plus, select the drive you want to search from the list on the left:

The cool thing is that Undelete Plus can work on network drives or on drives from another computer if you have them mapped on your computer. Click Start Scan to search for deleted files.

You’ll see a progress bar at the bottom as the scan finds files on the hard drive. It will also tell you the number of files that can be recovered.

Once the drive has been scanned, you can click on the sidebars to filter the results. You can view them in a two ways: Types and Folders. If you click on Types, you’ll be able to see all the files that can be recovered by File Type. Folders will allow you to browse to a particular folder on your drive and see if anything there can be recovered.

You can also filter the search results by typing in the file name, choose a date range for the Date Modified attribute, or putting in the approximate size.

Finally, check the boxes next to the files you want to recover and then click on the Start Undelete button. The files will be recovered to the location you specify.

Again, this program is usually not free, so make sure to download it and just save it on your computer in case you ever have to use it to recovery deleted files! Enjoy!
