Create UML-Venn diagrams and flowcharts for free

Earlier I had written about Gliffy, a free tool to create diagrams and flowcharts online for free and still think it’s one of the best alternatives to Microsoft Visio. However, I recently came across another nifty program that is completely ad-free and allows you to quickly create UML/Venn diagrams, database diagrams, plus flowcharts quickly!
It’s not online like Gliffy, but it’s a super tiny application only 1.3 MB in size! That’s way better than Visio, which eats up like 400 MB on my computer and I don’t know why! So if you’re looking for a quick and free way to create simple diagrams, then check out Diagram Designer!
Diagram Designer can be used to create flowcharts, UML class diagrams, slideshows and simple illustrations. It’s perfect for a corporate environment because it’s super easy to use, yet very useful for creating process maps on the fly like during a presentation, etc.
Here are some of the great features of Diagram Designer that I like about it:
- Downloadable object palette, so templates can be customized
- Built in spell checker
- Ability to add import images of various formats including WMF, PNG, BMP, GIF, JPG, etc. Also, ability to export your diagram into any of these picture formats.
- Slide show viewer if you have multiple diagrams, etc
- Built in graph plotter for plotting mathematical expressions
- Includes advanced calculator with equation solver
- Ability to edit images directly in Diagram Designer (crop, scale, etc)
- Compresses file format so drawings are minimal file size
If you go to the Templates page, you can download a whole host of templates that include objects for dialogues, flowcharts, Cisco network topology icons, electronic symbols, websites, and polygons.
Overall, I highly recommend this for anyone working in the corporate environment who either does not have Visio or does not want to waste half a GB of space! Enjoy!
