Update iPhone 3G and 3GS to iOS 4

With iPhone 4 in route from China to the hands of the 600,000 consumers who were able to pre-order it, Apple has released Ii 4 to the rest of the world. As we discussed previously, there are many benefits to iOS 4, most notably the ability to multitask, though Apple recently decided to only endow this capability to 3GS users (and iPhone 4 users, of course).

To update the iPhone, you must first make sure your iTunes software is up to date. Before connecting the iPhone, open iTunes. If you have iTunes set to check for updates, a window will appear asking if you would like to update now. Click Download iTunes if and when this menu appears.

It will take several minutes for iTunes to download and install the 106 MB update to version 9.2. After the install, you may be prompted to download the newest version of MobileMe to manage iPhone’s contact list and syncing.

If the menu above does not appear when you start iTunes, click Help and then About iTunes to check your current software version. 9.2 is required for the iPhone iOS 4 update.

If your software is not up to date, click Help and then Check for Updates to download version 9.2.

With iTunes updated, connect your iPhone to the computer. iTunes should begin the normal syncing routine. Once the iPhone backup is done, click the phone’s name from the Devices menu to the left.

The menu on the right will then change to show the current software version and other information about the iPhone. Towards the middle of the page is the option to update to the latest software version. Click the Update button.upgrade menu

A warning message then appears stating iTunes will backup all iPhone information and then perform an update that could take an hour or more. Click update.update 3

Another menu will appear displaying the attributes of iOS 4. Click Next.

Finally, click Agree on the software agreement to start the download and install process. The download took about 30 minutes on an 8MBPS cable connection.

In the early days of any software update, servers can become easily overloaded, so if the iOS 4 download takes longer than expected or times out, be patient. The new operating system has many nice upgrades that are worth the wait—at least, if your phone is not already jail broken.

Users with jail broken phones should do a little extra extra research to determine if their phones will lose the jail broken features after this update. If the last software update is any indication, it is very likely Apple has found a way to (at least temporarily) disable these features in iOS 4.
