Using Your Blackberry As a Modem

Have you ever found yourself stuck somewhere without access to the internet? Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you cannot find free wi-fi, or the local providers want to charge you an unreasonable amount of money just to surf the internet for a few minutes.

A lot of airports and hotels refuse to provide free wireless internet no matter what. The cellular providers have also realized that people want to use their Smartphones to connect laptops and other devices to the internet. And of course, they’ve found ways to restrict you from doing it without paying for an additional tethering plan.

If you ever find yourself desperate for a quick connection without an egregious fee, you can use the Tether application to turn your Blackberry into a modem.

Tether transfers data using your existing Blackberry data plan. If you’re already paying for unlimited data, install Tether on your laptop and on your Blackberry, and you’ll be able to surf the web anywhere your Blackberry has data coverage.

Keep in mind that the speed of your connection is limited to how fast your device can send and receive data. If you don’t have a 3G or 4G device and are not in a strong coverage area, do not expect blazing connection speeds.

Using Tether with Your Blackberry

1. Download the Mac or PC installer, and install Tether on your laptop.

2. Install Tether on your Blackberry using the OTA installer.

3. Disable all other internet connections.

4. Connect your Blackberry to your laptop via the USB cable. You can also use Tether via Bluetooth, but you will most likely sustain higher transfer speeds with a wired connection.

5. Run Tether on the laptop and the Blackberry at the same time and follow the on screen instructions on both devices.

6. Tether will connect your laptop to the internet through your Blackberry, and both devices will indicate that the connection has been made.

Tether is absolutely the easiest way to use your Blackberry as a modem for your Mac or Windows laptop when you’re on the go. There is a one time license fee of $49.95, but it pays for itself once you use it a few times on the road (considering it can cost $10 for just an hour of access at some locations).

There is a free 7 day trial, and a 30 day money back guarantee, so you will have plenty of time to decide if Tether is the right solution for you.

Tether is working on an Android version right now, so sign up for the beta to try it out for a while before having to pay for it.
