I got a working image of MacOS 10.6.5 running on VMware 7 Workstation on a Lenovo T410 with Intel Core i5 M520 and 8GB RAM. But when I start up iMovie '11, I get this error message:

Quartz Extreme required.
iMove requires a graphic card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.

What can I do to get iMovie to work?
Thanks for all help.

I found after OSX booted into desktop, I had to "connect" the darwin_snow.iso. It was mapped, but not connected. Once I did this, it showed up on my OSX desktop as VMWare Tools.

It is interesting, in the vmware log, you can see it try to find darwin.iso for VMWare Tools in your VMWare Workstation directoy. There are other iso files in this same location -- for each OS that VMWare natively supports.

I had to set SMC to false. I appreciate that tip -- I may have been stuck at the Apple Logo booting for a long time.

@Tjwakaa: That's nonsense. OS X can and does run as well on a PC as it does on so-called Mac hardware. I say "so-called", because it's the same hardware that PC's use, at least that's how it has been for 5 years, ever since Apple switched over to using Intel processors.

At any rate, a couple of months ago, I got the single most ridiculous deal on a brand new 2010 27" quad-Core i7, which cost me less than the entry level, so I would have been stupid not to go for it, if for no other reason than to re-sell it for $1k profit. However, I decided to keep it, because I really love it, and after a couple of months, it's still growing on me. There are a few drawbacks, though, which I will explain below.

First, let's see what it uses: a Core i7-870 2.93GHz w/ 3.6GHz TurboBoost. Do PC's have this quad-core i7? YES. It also has a Western Digital 1TB 7200rpm Black Caviar hard drive. Do you ever find these in PC's? Duh, YES again. The same goes for the ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card which you can get for $100 and which comes with 1GB of GDDR5 discrete video RAM! The gorgeous 27" LED IPS screen is made by LG I believe, and the RAM that Apple uses is from Hynix, which also supplies IBM and Lenovo with the very same type of memory.

On to the drawbacks: I am once again contemplating selling my iMac, so as to be able to connect eSATA and USB 3.0 drives externally, as FireWire 800 is the fastest rate at which you can transfer files with this iMac, if you don't count Gigabit Ethernet. More disappointing than that is the fact that I cannot install a couple of my SSD's (solid-state drives), or better yet, PCIe solid state flash memory, which is even faster than SATA SSD's. Windows 7 runs incredibly well on the iMac, too, either natively or virtualized by Parallels or VMWare Fusion, although Parallels beats the hell out of VMWare in terms of speed, compatibility, and stability. My Windows 7 WEI scores for CPU and RAM are both 7.5 out of 7.9 running Win 7 on its own NTFS partition, so I'm not lacking power, but I keep coming back to not being able to use my SSD's, which is just really frustrating, and I'm not about to pay Apple $750 for an SSD that's inferior to my Intel G2's which cost me 1/3 of what Apple charges. Once Intel's LightPeak becomes available and is set to replace not only USB and FireWire, but also standards like HDMI, these proprietary cable problems will be gone. Light Peak is not only supported by Apple as the future standard, but some rumors allege that Apple itself designed the technology. We shall see.

Sorry to ramble on, folks, but once I decide on a machine that will become my next Hackintosh, I'll be sure to write a detailed step-by-step tutorial, including 720p HD video! :D upI really need for someone to write some decent drivers for the Apple Trackpad. That baby is the single most awesome ingenious piece of innovation that I've ever owned. I'm never going to use a mouse ever again. lol

Cheers, guys! And keep on hacking away. OS X 10.6.5 will be coming out tomorrow, by the way, and OS X 10.6.6 will include the Mac App Store and is already in its final testing stage, just FYI. ;)

Well it just goes to show ya, Mac OS just isn't made to run on a PC. Just like how my cars in NFS ProStreet aren't made to go 30 feet in the air from a glitch in an online race... Good times... good times... Was demeor there?

Solution for this:

Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization.

is to make sure that you have selected "Other OS" from Guest Operation System in Virtual Machine options tab

For everyone with "“Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization." woes ...

Turn on/Enable Virtualization Support in your PC's BIOS!

If your BIOS doesn't have a Virtualization option and you're getting this error ... you're out of luck. No MAC OS X for you until you get a system than can enable virtualization. Or you buy a MAC.
