In Part II, we’ll go through some more useful tips to be aware of while using Internet Explorer 7. Browsing the Internet might be overtaking watching TV now these days, so may as well spend a little time to learn some quick shortcuts or tricks that might save a couple of hundred hours over your lifetime! First off, let’s go through some handy Internet Explorer 7 keyboard shortcuts:

Toggle between full-screen and regular views of the browser window

Go to the previous page

ALT+LEFT ARROW or BACKSPACE

Find on this page

Open Favorites

Switch between tabs

Go to the search box

F4

CTRL+D

Select all items on the current webpage

CTRL+A

2. Change your default home page – If you want to add a new page to your set of home pages or if you want to replace your current home page, click on the arrow to the right of the Home Page button and choose Add or Change Home Page. You can select Use this webpage as your only home page if you simply want the current page as your home page. Choose Add this webpage to your home page tabs if you already have a home page and you want to add more than one.

3. Reset Internet Explorer to default settings – This can prove to be useful if someone has gone ahead and somehow messed up your IE browser and you can’t figure out what the problem is. As a note, the items that are NOT deleted when you perform a reset are Favorites, Feeds, Content Advisor settings, ActiveX controls, Certificate information, and Internet & VPN connection settings.

Click on Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

4. Change number of days web pages are kept in browsing history – You can use this setting to keep track of the web sites you have visited over the specified range or you can specify 0 days, which will not keep a web history at all.

Click on Tools, Internet Options, General tab, and under Browsing History choose Settings. Under History, specify the number of days.

5. Customize web site font and color settings – Changing the default settings for font and color are usually for Accessibility purposes, but if you just want to view all the pages you browse in one type of font, then here’s how to change it:

Go to Tools, Internet Options, General tab, and choose Accessibility. Select the Ignore colors specified on webpages, Ignore font styles specified on webpages, and Ignore font sizes specified on webpages check boxes. Then click the Fonts and Colors buttons on the General tab and choose the desired font and color.

6. Add customized commands to the IE toolbar – There are lots and lots of great ways that you can customize the toolbar in IE, such as using Bookmarklets or installing other third-party add-ons. Bookmarklets are little pieces of Javascript code you can add to IE that extends it’s functionality.

Here’s a large list of good Bookmarklets created by Smashing Magazine.

You can customize the toolbar by right-clicking on the command bar and choosing Customize Command Bar. Then click Add or Remove commands and move items between the Available and Current toolbar button lists.

Hope that helps speed up someone’s browsing experience! Enjoy!

Is there any short cut that can be used to hide and unhide the tab (window) on the taskbar so that no one can see what site i was surfing.
