New Google software updates and features
Posted on October 31, 2007 at 12:08 pm
I’m a big Google person and it’s always nice when they update their products with lots of nice features or quality improvements. If you haven’t had time to check everything out, here’s a quick browse through of the latest new products and software updates from Google.
Gmail now supports IMAP
This is a big one! Gmail now supports the IMAP protocol, which means you now have the ability to sync your email inbox with all of your favorite devices. Basically, you can have your mail synced between your desktop email client, your web browser, and your mobile phone for example. This was previously not possible with the POP protocol. Any action you perform, such as reading, sending, deleting, or moving emails will be automatically reflected on all locations where you check your email! Pretty sweet!
YouTube now shows up in Google Earth
Love using Google Earth? Well, now there’s a new layer that you can activate in Google Earth for YouTube videos. Next time you’re browsing through cities in Mexico, it might just pop up with some crazy spring break videos off of YouTube. Hmm interesting. I’m sure lots of people will be viewing beach locations! Ahem! Anyway, it’s a great way to check out new parts of the world and see videos related to that specific location!
Google Desktop 5.5 Beta is out
I love Google Desktop and they’ve finally updated it with some nice features, such as the ability to run Desktop gadgets in iGoogle and a new better looking Quick Search Box. Also, they have improved the algorithm for searching Microsoft Outlook emails. The cool thing about the remote iGoogle functionality is that you can use gadgets like virtual flower pot, wireless signal meter, and media player that normally are only allowed on the desktop, into your iGoogle browser page! Nice!
Google Docs goes mobile
This is going to be great news for any mobile device users! You can now view a list of all of your documents and spreadsheets on your Blackberry, iPhone or Windows mobile device. For iPhone users, you can even view your presentations! Cool.
Google Maps gets all social
Now when you view a map that someone created or see a review that someone wrote, you can also hover over their name and get a bit of information about the author. The new Profile Pages in Google Maps allows you to see aggregate information for all public maps for that person and all reviews that person has written. You can also add your own picture, etc.
So if you didn’t already know about these new features, definitely check them out when you have time! Enjoy!
