Google 466453 Text Number Hacks and Commands

Google’s SMS (text messaging) search function can be very useful, particularly for those people who don’t have smartphones or have a data plan for their cell phones. Most everyone has text messaging, but many mobile phone users simply prefer standard flip phones, or standard, “non-smart” phones. If you don’t have an iPhone, Android phone, BlackBerry, etc… you can still use any regular cell phone to get live Google search results.
Google SMS search has been around for a while now, but it seems that Google has added some additional support and commands for their text based messaging service. Because Google for mobile is so popular, they now offer additional apps too, which you can learn more about at Google’s mobile SMS page.
As mentioned in the opening paragraph, today’s tip will likely be most relevant for those who do not have smartphones, although, this tip will work on any cell phone with text messaging capabilities.
Those who do have smartphones can simply use the web browser + data plan on their phones to search the web on the go. If you have a cell phone without a data plan, here’s how you can search Google via text messaging:
Google SMS Search
To get started, simply grab your cell phone and compose a new text (SMS) message. This of course, will be a slightly different process depending on which phone you have. Enter the # 466453 (G-O-O-G-L-E), as the recipient.
In the message section, where you type the actual text message, you can use the following Google supported SMS search functions:
Local Directory/Phonebook
search term + zip code.
example: walmart 90001
Movie Showtimes
movies + zip code
example: movies 90001
Dictionary
define + word
example: define cognizant
Translate
translate + word + to + language
example: translate taxi to spanish
Unit Conversion
# unit + in + unit
example: 1 quart in liters
Directions and Maps
directions + location + to + location
example: directions New York, NY to Boulder, CO
The above short codes are the quickest way to get popular info on the go. However, if you are not necessarily searching for a local place, dictionary, translate, directions, etc… you can also search Google using any term.
Generic Search
web + your search term
example: web who was the first man on the moon
The following image contains even more, specific SMS search functions.
Demo Google SMS Search
You can actually demo all of these SMS text functions on your computer. Google’s interactive SMS demo page allows you to try out search commands via web browser.
The above examples are among the most popular Google SMS search commands. Now, even if you haven’t jumped on board the smartphone band wagon, you can still get info on the go via Google SMS.
