How to change your Google-Gmail password

Want to change your Gmail password to something a little bit more secure than your first name? I’ve had some friends ask me about this and was surprised that they were a little confused as to how to change their Gmail password.
You would think that you would change your password in Gmail, but that’s not the case and that’s probably why I get that question so often! In order to change your Gmail password, you have to change your Google account password, which then gives you access to Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google services.
So here’s a quick walk-though on the steps to change your password:
1. Log into Gmail and click on Settings at the top right
2. Then click on the Accounts tab under Settings
3. Click on Google Account settings at the bottom of the page
This will open up in a new window or new tab and you’ll see the option at the top left to change your Google account password.
That’s it! Remember that this changes your main Google account password, which means ALL of your other Google services, like Adwords, Analytics, Docs, Groups, Knol, Maps, Notebook, Reader, Picasa Web Albums, Google Talk, and YouTube will also now use the new password.
I actually find this better because it would be a royal pain to have different passwords for each Google service that I use. And if you’re worried about security, you can read an earlier post on how to enable HTTPS in Gmail. Enjoy!

Couple of days back, I was searching for this very feature in my GMail…coincidence!
Though I did not go thru the same steps mentioned here, I had figured another way. While logged in to GMail, I browsed http://www.google.com/accounts and there it is bingo…right in front of you!
oh c’mon man… this is not so hard to do so… just go to google.com signin and click the “My Account” link on the page.. there you have it. is this TOO HARD for people ??
I agree, it’s not very hard, but many people have asked me! I write computer tips based on what people want to know…apparently it’s not obvious to some…
Thanks for the very useful tip Aseem.
And I’d like to concur with you on one thing.
Of course “this is not so hard to do” for a tech blogger and it had better not be. But trust me, if most people knew how to do simple things like these, most of the blogs wouldn’t be as successful as they are and wouldn’t be needed.
It’s like saying that we shouldn’t have simple guides for Excel or Word or Powerpoint, things are so obvious. Of course they are obvious once you know how to do it.
I have seen people at work take a long time to do something that could be done in mins if only they knew a few Excel shortcuts.
Actually, I would recommend you to come up with some more posts for such shortcuts and tips for Excel if you have the time.
Your blog is a lot of fun Aseem….even for non-techy like me
Good Luck!
