MuxTape & MixWit- Upgrade Your Mixtapes

Posted on April 12, 2008 at 5:22 am

When I think of my younger days, I remember my endless supply of mixtapes. I loved recording my favorite songs from the radio and creating my own customized playlists. If you needed a good mixtape for a party scene or a long trip, then I was the one to turn to.

Now that technology has advanced so much, most of us have long forgotten about our hidden boxes filled with cassette tapes. Downloading songs or albums can be done by clicking a few buttons and then entering your payment information. Instead of relying on a cassette player to play songs, we can carry an iPod or other mp3 players for easier listening.

Despite the fact that we are currently in the 21st century, some of us still long for the days of mixtapes. Now, we can get our much needed fix through websites like MuxTape.com and Mixwit.com. They each allow users to blend the past with the present in the form of music access. Creating an online playlist can quickly bring back those wonderful days of your youth. After listening to a few of my favorite songs, I almost forgot that I couldn’t move the way I used to.

Muxtape offers an easy way for users to share and create a dance worthy mixtape. With this service, you’ll be able to put together a perfect playlist of your music favorites. Each track can only be uploaded individually to the server. There is also a limit of 10 MB per track and users are not able to upload more than one song from a particular artist or album.

The entire point of doing this is to stop the illegal sharing of music. In order to prevent illegal actions by its users, Muxtape also prevents them from creating more than one playlist via their service. Although I understand the reason behind limiting some of the features of Muxtape, I still find it overly restrictive. There are other online services that allow more freedom and customizable features.

Mixwit takes another approach to creating the best mixtape ever. Instead of uploading songs from your own music collection, you can easily search them out online via Seeqpod. This will be a major benefit for anyone that does not have the patience to upload songs one by one. I loved using this feature because it gave me the chance to create multiple mixtapes in a few minutes and then enjoy what I had put together. The only negative aspect of using this service is the aggravation of choosing songs that were no longer available. It would have been better if the service had only listed links that were active.

Overall, both services offer a useful way to enjoy your favorite songs from the past or current. Instead of digging through hidden boxes for past mixtapes, consider upgrading your style and creating one via the web. If you are proud of your music creation, then share it with the world and let them have just as much fun. All music lovers should visit Muxtape and Mixwit for a bit of online music fun.

one site you didn’t mention is imeem.com – they’ve been doing this for a couple of years now, they’re really like a youtube for music. Upload your favorite mp3’s from your favorite bands, arrange them into playlists and then share with their friends. So far it sounds identical to muxtape, but where muxtape finishes imeem just keeps going, firstly, because anyone can upload tunes you can search the site for tunes other people have posted and make playlists from those. You don’t even need to upload anything to make your mixes, just borrow songs posted by artists, record labels or just fans. There’s no limit on the size of the mix and the widget can be embedded outside of the site.

There’s a bit of a debate as to whether muxtape and mixwit are elegantly simple clones of imeem, taking the one feature and making it easy, or whether they’re just skunk work clones of the site instead.
