Speed Up Windows Boot Speed with Startup Delayer

Posted on February 7, 2008 at 6:58 am

If you used to tweak your system for some extra performance, there is only one known popular way to speed up Windows startup and that is by removing applications from Windows startup list. This can greatly reduce the time for Windows to start up but will work only if you don’t really need those applications to run. What if I tell you there is another way to speed up Windows startup, without having to remove all the entries?

A freeware called Startup Delayer can be used as an alternative to speed up your Windows boot speed, thus letting you start working on your computer as soon as possible.

How Startup Delayer Works

A normal Windows startup process works like this – Windows will read the startup file and try to load all the applications at the same time. The impact of this is that you will experience a great slow down on your system because each single application tries to compete for CPU time, memory, hard disk at the same time. Sad but true for the most popular operating system on earth.

R2 Studios, the creator of Startup Delayer attempts to solve this problem in quite a creative way. It allows you to start your startup apps one by one in an orderly fashion by delaying its startup time. You can set how many seconds after Windows has started to load each application. For example, you can set your antivirus and firewall to start first, and all other applications 1 minute after that in 10 or 20 seconds interval. The advantage of this approach is that only the most important apps can be loaded first so that you can quickly use your computer without having to wait for all other non-critical startup programs to finish loading. This way, no resource competition will happen at startup because applications are started one after another.

Features of Startup Delayer

  • Time Chart – Drag and drop startup entries to the time chart to delay an application’s startup. You can also rearrange application’s startup order based on usage priorities.
  • Manual delayed time editing – refer to the startup list and right click on an entry to enter its delayed startup time.
  • Filters – You can set Startup Delayer to affect a single person or group based on Windows user’s list.

  • Space Evenly – You can enter a total amount of delay and have it auto assigned evenly for each delayed startup list. For example, you can define 120 seconds for 6 delayed items. The result will be a 20 seconds startup time interval between 6 applications.

  • Application information – You can classify startup items based on System Process, 3rd Party Apps or Malware. Useful for quick identification of entries.
  • Advanced mode – Switch to this mode to allow Startup Delayer to delete a startup item with your consent.
  • Language support – Startup Delayer supports English, Chinese, French and more.

Once you have download Startup Delayer , installed and configured the delayed time for each application, don’t forget to press the “Activate” button! You can see Startup Delayer in action in the next Windows startup process by choosing a “Graphical Version” or choose an “Invisible Version” to let it works its wonders in the background.

I’ve tested Startup Delayer on my own computer and feel satisfied with the overall performance. What I did was to run my antivirus and firewall without any delay, and instruct Startup Delayer to load all other startup items 1 minute after that in 20 second intervals for each app. By doing so, I can quickly start browsing the Internet or blogging without waiting for all the startup items to load first. Cool, isn’t it? Try it today!
