Keep your computer up to date with UpdateChecker

Do you ever bother updating the programs installed on your computer? Keeping up to date with the latest versions of all the software installed on our PC’s is actually quite a pain. Most Linux and Mac OS X users do not have to worry about this problem as the operating system is smart enough to update other applications other than itself!

Sadly, for Windows users, Microsoft only updates it’s own programs and operating system, thus leaving it up to us to make sure we have the latest security updates and patches for most of the software on the system. And if you’re a computer savvy person, you probably have a crap load of software installed, so it’s even more of a pain.

filehippo

That’s where our friends at FileHippo come in handy! They have a huge selection of free Windows software ranging from anti-virus and anti-spyware to file-sharing and firewalls. What I really like about FileHippo is that they make finding new software fun and easy. They give full descriptions of all software and they also provide screenshots also.

Another really cool feature about the site is that you can find older versions of all of the software, as well as the newest version. This comes in really handy sometimes when a new version has some bug and you have to revert back to the older version.

ccleaner

So that’s all really great, but how many times are you going to visit FileHippo to see if you software has a newer version? Probably once or twice and then never again! I do the same. That’s why it’s really cool that they have come out with their own software that checks all of the software on your computer and finds out if any programs are out of date! Sweet!

UpdateChecker is completely free and is very fast! It scans all the software on your computer, checks the versions, and then sends this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases. Everything is then nicely displayed to you in a list with a link to download the update.

You’ll also get a list of Beta versions that are available if you’re one of those risk-taking people who like to try out the newest software! However, the coolest thing about this software is that it runs as an executable only and therefore does not need to be installed on your computer! You can copy the EXE file to a USB stick and run it on any computer instantly!

And these guys really thought about how lazy we are because they also included options so that the programs runs every time Windows starts, a setting I would recommend turning on. That way, you really never have to worry about visiting software vendor sites to find out if there is a newer version of of software.

If UpdateChecker does not find all of the software installed on your computer, i.e. if you did not install it to Program Files, etc, then you can also specify custom locations for the program to search.

Note that the software only checks for updates of free software, not commercial of paid software. I had written about another program called SUMO earlier that aimed to monitor all software for available updates. Another program that you can use to download software updates, patches, and upgrades is UpdateStar. You can also check out an earlier post I had written on free computer maintenance software called Glary Utilities.

Definitely check out FileHippo’s UpdateChecker and the other software mentioned above to keep your computer up to date! Enjoy!
