For those who mentioned outlook: It has no portable version. I have used portable Thunderbird for a time, but it has poor html suport when sending. The fact that an email client is portable is very useful: very easy to do a backup, just copy the folder somewhere and its done, you can acces your email anywhere just from a usb key. Anyway i am going to try this one...Thank you for this article, very well written!

I have to agree that Thunderbird is the best portable email client. Second best is Pegasus mail. But in the end, I would just do what Lauren says, which is using Gmail and Outlook. You can actually sync your Outlook mail with Gmail, making it even easier.

I've tried many email clients also, I have ended up with Outlook and Gmail. Gmail is portable in the sense that you can access it from anywhere, so who really needs a desktop app any way!

I've tried nearly all mail programs to find EssentialPIM http://www.essentialPIM.com to have the best features. It's a big step up from Outlook, lighter and faster, and more features.

For me, it is just a matter of personal preferences. No problem with using multiple clients - that is why most email clients support mail import / export features.

Nirmal, good point. I've tried out a couple too, but Outlook still has a lot of features that I can't seem to live without! I've used Bat Mail myself and that was the closest to making me switch!

As long as people have outlook they wont be tempted to try free ones. I tried Windows live mail, thunderbird, incredimail and then came back to Outlook 2007. :-)
