I've been searching for this the last 10 years! It's the same way we (humans) organize task on a physical desktop. (and Windows 3.1 has never been near that metaphor). There is though in Gnome (or some other Linux shell) something called "Desktop Areas" which might be the same (I've not tried it)

Kevin it's about being organized and more productive. I run many, many projects at the same time, and I often "lose" stuff on my desktop. My desktop is extremely uncluttered compared to most people I work with, but you always need a few documents and shortcuts for quick, easy and temporary access. So even though I have 10-15 icons, I need them organized by what I'm working on now, what I can put off until later, and what I permanently need to be there (for whatever reason). Think of Fences as those piles of paperwork sitting on your non-virtual desk. Fences allows me to organize a group of icons in the same way that I can organize a pile of paperwork on my desk.
