Prevent programs from being shut or closed

Posted on August 17, 2008 at 5:19 am

My little brother always closes my P2P Program, which really annoys me because a download which I thought I could leave over night to finish, has to consume another day because it wasn’t actually downloading.

Everyone has a few programs they never want shut, but they end up getting shut anyway. These programs being web servers, databases, mail servers, or just like me, a P2P Client. Its hard being at your computer 24/7 to check whether the program is still up, so I looked for a ways to keep them there permanently. And here’s my methods.

Method 1: Control Running Programs

CRP is a program which basically controls all the programs on your computer. On the section labeled ‘Instance Controlling’, you control the amount of instances of a program you want to be running. On the section labeled ‘Instance Launching’, you just say the programs you want to be running, and they’ll run whenever they’re closed, either by accident, task manager or the user. The ‘Drag & Drop’ feature from Windows Explorer also works.

Please note that CRP, although it does exactly what is says, uses a lot of CPU. When it’s checking the programs in the background, it uses an average of 70& CPU. If CRP is closed, none of the programs you want to be monitored will be monitored, as it does not go into the little toolbar.

Method 2: Application Monitor

Application Monitor is a program which repeatedly checks the specified programs to see if they’ve been closed, and as soon as it detects it’s been closed, it instantly runs it again. With Application Monitor, you can always be sure that your programs won’t be down for long.

Please note that Application Monitor takes up virtually zero CPU and memory when it’s minimized, so it should be virtually lag-free. In addition to that, programs are usually restarted within 1 second of it closing.

Method 3: Keep Running

Keep Running basically makes sure that when you launch a program, it stays launched. This is helpful when you need to restart a crashed application or ensure something doesn’t get closed by accident. It’s virtually impossible to close as well, only closable via Task Manager.

Please note that Keep Running is a tiny program, weighing in at only 36kb.

And so, there you have it. Whether you’re just a regular downloader, or you host masses of servers, your problem is solved.

There is a program called NoClose that will also help.

All of this is for a monitor that will display only one program and people won’t be able to close the thing, but it still has the minimizing function :(
