IPNetInfo – Free IP address lookup tool

Are you looking for a way to trace the location of an IP address? Maybe you have gotten some kind of email from someone and want to know where it originated from in order to determine it’s authenticity?

I’ve written earlier how to trace an email using it’s IP address, but it can be quite confusing for someone who is not familiar with technical jargon. That’s why I am writing about a program I found that retrieves information about an IP address automatically, such as the owner, the country/state, the IP address range, and contact information (email, address, phone, fax, etc).

IPNetInfo is a great tool for locating an IP address or tracing an IP address. You can always hit up a WHOIS data to find out who owns a website or who hosts a website, but this tool does all of that for you, plus more!

ip address lookup

The great thing about the program is that it runs as a stand-alone EXE file, so you can carry it around on your USB stick. Once you launch it, you’ll get a window where you can enter all of the IP addresses that you want to trace and get information about.

Another great feature of IPNetInfo is the fact that you can paste email headers into the box and it will automatically extract all of the IP addresses out of the email and display information about them. So if you read my previous article on how to track the original location of an email and could not understand where to find the IP address in the email header, then use this program!

lookup ip address

Click OK and the program will automatically go out to the ARIN WHOIS server and try to get as much information as possible about the IP address and domain name. Note that if it does not find anything about the IP address in ARIN, it will go out to other WHOIS servers, such as RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, and AfriNIC.

For example, putting in the IP address of my domain, Online Tech Tips, I was able to get the following information about my server:

ip address info

It found that my hosting company was Media Temple and it also gives me the location of the city that my server is running in. I also get information about name servers, abuse contact info, the admin contact info and more.

If you are being harassed via email by someone, you can use this tool to figure out where they are coming from and possibly contact the ISP or hosting company to see if they can do something about it or at least give you more information.

You can also type in domain names and get information about them also. Just make sure to check the box “Convert host names to IP addresses” if you type in a domain name.

Overall, it’s a very useful tool for tracing the location of an IP address in an email you received or to get more information about a domain, such as the hosting company and location of the server. Enjoy!
