Enso Launcher – Forget All Your Windows Shortcuts

Posted on February 13, 2008 at 7:01 am

I don’t know about you but my Windows computer is full of Windows shortcuts because I keep installing and reinstalling programs to find applications that I like. The problem is that all the shortcuts have become useless to me now. Most of the time, I have to search for the shortcut to launch an application which is quite a troublesome task to do. Being a shortcut, it doesn’t suppose to waste any of my time!

Thankfully, a group of user interface experts from Humanized had created an ingenious freeware called Enso Launcher which made it possible for me to forget where I put my Windows shortcuts.

What Enso Launcher Does

Enso Launcher is one of the first products of the Enso project, which objective is to create plain, usable applications with simplicity and elegance. Enso Launcher is what you normally know as a program launcher, a program used to launch other program easily. The only difference between Enso Launcher and other program launcher is that it does a whole lot more. Enso Launcher makes full use of the Caps Lock key – one of the most popular, under utilized key on your keyboard. Once you have download Enso Launcher and install it, I am quite sure the Caps Lock key will be your favorite.

How to Use Enso Launcher

To start using Enso Launcher, press the Caps Lock key on your keyboard and hold it down. You will notice that a translucent overlay appear on top of your screen welcoming you to use Enso. With the Caps Lock still pressed, type “open internet. Enso will list down a few applications that have the word “internet“. For example: to launch Internet Explorer, choose “open internet explorer” from the list with your down arrow key and release the Caps Lock button. As simple as that.

The advantage of this method is that you don’t have to remember where the shortcuts are located to launch any application. Enso will find all the shortcut locations automatically and remember it for you. Another advantage is that you don’t have to remember an application full name – for example: typing “open mozi” will result in Enso Launcher showing “open mozilla firefox” and “open mozilla thunderbird“, if you have both installed on your system. Isn’t that cool?

Enso Launcher Features

With the Caps Lock key pressed, Enso Launcher can do cool things like these:

  • Open a file, folder, or URL with the “open” command.
  • Switch between Firefox tabs with the “go” command.
  • Switch between open windows with the “go” command.
  • Learn how to launch a currently selected file, folder or URL with the “learn as open” command.
  • Unlearn a command with the “undo unlearn” command
  • Maximize an open window with “maximize” command.
  • Unmaximize an open window with “unmaximize” command.

  • Minimize an open window with “minimize” command.
  • Choose a specific application to run a file with the “open with” command.
  • Quit an application with the “quit” command.
  • Display a list on how you can use Enso with the “command list” command.

Go on, try to launch a few applications with Enso Launcher and you will find that the Caps Lock key will become almost indispensable. Still not convinced to download and use Enso Launcher? Try to open 10 folders and navigate between each them with the default Windows Alt+Tab keyboard combo or the tasksbar. Can you find and navigate to a folder with a particular name easily? Next, try to achieve this with Enso Launcher’s “go” command. I bet you can see how powerful Enso can be now.

Enso Launcher is one the best freeware that I’ve tested in the last few months. It already improves my productivity by allowing me to use the keyboard more, instead of switching back and forth to launch some programs with the mouse. I sincerely believe Enso Launcher can revolutionizes the way we work with Windows. Still struggling to remember and find where your Windows shortcuts / applications are? Stop doing that anymore and leave it all to Enso Launcher’s “caps lock” key magic!

    It sounds very compicated.
i have been using a program called “Launchy”
    http://www.download.com/Launch.....d=10876912
ive found that it is easier because it has more features in my opinion.

It can open ANY shortcut, link, folder, ect. on your entire computer,
and if you use the capslock key fairly frequently (like i do)
it can be customised to which shortcut will activate it.

SuperLauncher is the best launcher ever! SuperLauncher launches applications with hotkeys or one click of the mouse but the twist about it is that you add new shortcuts by drag and drop. You simlpy drag and drop applications, websites, files, or folders, and wizards guide you through adding hotkeys or one-click shortcuts. You can even schedule shortcuts.

I use it and I totally recommend it.

    Best,
    Alex
