I’m going to start a little section on free software downloads because I have and use so many myself that it would be wrong for me not to share the knowledge! Today’s pick is a nice little file archiver that has a high compression ratio and won’t annoy the crap out of you like WinZip with the moving “I Agree” button (hopefully someone got that)!!

Here are some of the features of the software:

Supported formats:
Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS
For ZIP and GZIP formats 7-Zip provides compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip

According to the chart, the 7z format compresses 30 to 70% better than the zip format. And 7-Zip compresses the zip format about 2 to 10% better than other programs.
