A cool free encyclopedia just for movies

Have you ever wanted to list all of the movies you’ve watched and the ones you’ve missed?  I am a movie lover and I watch at least 2 movies per week, so lately I realized that I should keep track of all of the movies and TV shows, so I know which ones are recommendable.

With all of these movies with different actors and genres, it is so hard to keep up.  I can barely remember the title of the TV series with that Michael Scofield guy breaking out of prison!  Instead of Google or Encarta, I present you a software with a surprisingly cool list of all movies and TV shows, complete with primary casting and production details and a plot line with liners from film critics.

Coollector is a very light app with a huge list of movies and TV series, which they claim to be updated daily.  It has a simple split screen interface where the right portion shows the list of movies while the left portion shows the details of the movie you click from the list:

To search for a movie just click the search button that looks like a magnifying glass:

Click String Search so you can enter a part of a movie title:

Enter the words that you want to search.  A partial entry will trigger the program’s auto completion so you can see realtime if the movie you want is on the database:

You can then choose any of the results from the search output.  In the example below I chose Kill Bill Vol. 2 so the details of that movie appeared on the left hand side:

If you want to build your list of owned movies just click a media type from the Existing Videos to tell which type of media you own:

Click Add as Owned to add the media to your owned movies:

A confirmation window will appear so just click Add as Owned again to add the movie:

You can also add your own movie rating from bad to excellent which is represented by color coded smileys:

I love the program’s ability to readily show you linked information.  For example, you can click an actor’s name on the left hand side and all of the movies for that actor will appear on the list at the right hand side:

There are also a bunch of keyboard shortcuts provided by the developers:

If you are a movie and TV series buff like me, you will love this software.  It is very easy and intuitive to use.  The information contained on this database is impressive, at least for Hollywood movies.  If it doesn’t have a movie that you saw or owned, you can add it on the database yourself! It also helped me out a lot with movie trivia stuff like which Quentin Tarantino movie I missed or which year did Eddie Murphy fail to appear in a movie.

Ben Carigtan shows you how it’s done.
