Thanks for writing about this software. I've been using PerfectDisk for defragmenting my computer, but it's not free. This program looks like it does the job well too. Thanks.

Be ware that Diskeeper and PerfectDisk are competitors. PerfectDisk has alwayes used this "talking bad" about Diskeeper to promote themself. Not very sympathetic, and made me lose interest for PerfectDisk . They obviously do not have a very good product.

I have been using SmartDefrag for the past few weeks on Windows XP, Windows 7 (RC), and Windows Server 2003. It has worked very well with one little glitch. The computers that are in a lab environment have Deep Freeze on them to restore them to a known state each morning when the computer reboots. The default for the scheduler buit into SMartDefrag schedules the application to defrag the drives at 10 PM every other Sunday. I wanted it to run daily at 2 AM (during the Deep Freeze maintenance window). Rather than run a scheduled defragmentation at 2:00 AM it seems the scheduled task is deleted (before running). The scheduled task is recreated the first time I log in (after 2:00 AM), but it has the SmartDefrag default time and date (every other Sunday).

SmartDefrag is a great tool and I would use it exclusively except for this problem. But because of this problem, I think I will go back to JKDefrag which I can setup in a scheduled task.

is there any way to reset the MFT so that saving an 800MB - 1.4GB will save in a contiguous block instead of being scribbled all over the disk which has 300GB free space?
it sucks to see the analysis report showing the file fragments anywhere from 300 to 1,500 for a single CD length Audio file

I've come across this document comparing Diskeeper and PerfectDisk, it's very interesting that Diskeeper actually made things worse in the end!

I have been running SmartDefrag for a few days now, and it seems to run as described. I have not run into any problems as yet.

On IOBit's website, it is stated that SmartDefrag is Windows 7, Vista, XP, and 2000 compatible. This is a little odd considering that the Windows 7 developer distribution beta is not due out for several weeks.

I am running Windows XP Professional, 1GB RAM, 3GHz HT Processor, with an 80GB 7200RPM hard drive; so far so good!

Thanks for the response!

This product seems "Designed for Windows Vista, XP, and 2000" only. It would be interesting to know if someone tested it on a Windows 2003 server.
