Debut – Free video capture and screen recording software

One of my favorite screen recording software apps over the years has been Camtasia, it’s free and works very well. However, it can only be used to record your desktop screen and that’s it. Recently I found another free software, called Debut, that is a complete video recording and capturing software.

Debut is a very simple and easy to use program that allows you to capture video directly onto your PC from multiple sources including a webcam, a digital video camera, or from a capture device. It can also record anything on your desktop screen, including playing videos.

The cool thing about this software is that you can use it to record anything on your screen or from an external video source. Also, the program has the option to save the video in numerous formats, including AVI, WMV, FLV, ASF, MPG, 3GP, MP4, MOV and more!

So if you want to make a how-to tutorial or instructional video by recording certain procedures on your computer, Debut can do it. If you want to make your videos from your webcam and add captions and effects, Debut can do it. If you want to connect your digital video camera to your computer and record the video to your computer or to a DVD, Debut can do it.

It can also record audio along with video if you are making a instructional video. You can also adjust the resolution and frame rate of the final output video. It even has the option to email the video once the recording is complete.

Other sweet features include the ability to automatically record to two locations at once, such as to your computer and to a backup device. It can also automatically transmit videos over the Internet using FTP.

And if you already have a USB Video Capture Device, Debut will detect it and allow you to record anything that you can connect to the video capture device!

Overall Debut has some great features which has made it’s way into my daily arsenal of apps. After playing around with it, I like it much better than Camtasia. So if you’re looking for free video capture or screen recording software, now you just need to install one application! Enjoy!

    I dont think Camtasia is free…It cost $299 after a 30 day trial[http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp]

    I think you might mean CamStudio which is free – Camtasia is definitely not free :-) ~megan

    I tried Debut, but it seems it did not work well in my computer. And I got to down low some strange component to make it work. I would prefer something called DemoCreator.

    I think Debut is an efficient software. It has some really nice features like recording videos to two locations simultaneously. I have also tried Fast Video Indexer. There is a free trial to download from Fast Video Indexer and it does not add watermarks.

    You’ve forgot about Jet Screenshot (jetscreenshot.com). I think it is the best for screenshots

    debut seems like a cool program, but i wish it could capture video when programs like video games are running, when i try to capture with one running, it says there is no camera detected, even when i have the screen button seleected

    Why can Debut not capture from KM PLAYER and WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER? Also why pinacle studio cannot edit any file received from debut?

    I cant record anything because the debut video capturing screen makes everything lag

    @taylor – You might just have a slow computer. If you have low RAM or a slow processor, it will lag. I’ve used Debut and it works great on my PC. They have the lite version, which lets you record video from a webcam, a camcorder or your desktop.

    You mentioned that it can record at two locations simultaneously. However, I am unable to find that feature! Kindly tell me where I can find this feature.
