Create 3D designs & models, 3D animations, 3D games using Blender

Blender is such a simple name for such a bad ass open-source application. Blender is a completely free open-source 3D content generation suite which can be used to create 3D animations, 3D worlds, 3D shading, 3D rendering, 3D games, and tons more. If you’re looking for an advanced and feature-rich 3D graphics generator, Blender is the program you’ve been looking for.
Using Blender, you can create some of the most realistic 3D models that you can think of. You can then animate your 3D creations and even create 3D games using Blender. Here’s a couple of screenshots of some really cool looking 3D models created using Blender:
Here are a couple of the major features of the Blender software:
-
Interface - Full customizable window layout, undo support for all levels, anti-aliased fonts and international support, custom themes, non-overlapping UI, etc.
-
Animation - Non-linear animation editor for mixing, automated walkcycles along paths, morphing abilities, audio playback and mixing for sound synchronization, etc.
-
Modeling - Range of 3D objects including polygon meshes, B-line curves, vector fonts. Full multi-resolution sculpting capabilities with 2D/3D brushes, python scripting access for custom tools.
-
Rendering - Fast inbuilt raytracer, lots of effects including motion blur, oversampling, non-square pixels, halo, lens flare, fog, etc.
-
Realtime 3D/Game Creation - Graphical logic for defining behavior without need for coding, collision detection and dynamic simulation, full support for vehicle dynamics (friction, etc), supports all OpenGL lighting modes, playback of games, etc.
Most of this stuff I don’t even understand and I didn’t even bother to mention 90% of the features. You can read the full feature list here.
The other cool thing about Blender is that it works on a whole range of operating systems and platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Linux PPC, Solaris, FreeBSD, and Irix. That’s pretty neat!
Blender was originally an in-house 3D software by a Dutch animation firm called NeoGeo, and judging by the amazing 3D models shown above, you can tell it’s very professional. Enjoy!
