Cannot open your hard drive in Windows?

Posted on December 11, 2008 at 5:34 am

Recently, I came across a client that could not open his hard drive in Windows. When he would click on the C drive, it would come up with an Open With dialog box! Earlier when he tried to open his C drive, it would say “Windows cannot find this program or file”. Strange!

Then I found out that he had a virus and was able to remove it using Kaspersky, however, the virus messed up something with the Windows registry and therefore clicking on the C drive resulted in either an Open With dialog or a “cannot find this program” error.

If you are unable to open your C drive, it’s probably because of a previous virus. Luckily, you can fix this by downloading a freeware utility that will fix inaccessibility issues.

Disk Healer can fix many common disk errors caused by viruses. It also has a large number of tweaks that you can use to tweak Windows XP.

On top of fixing the problem of not being able to open your hard drive in Explorer, it can also fix Task Manager, Folder Options, and registry editor inaccessibility. If you cannot access any of these in Windows after a virus infection, then use Disk Heal to fix it.

If a virus has hidden some of your files or folders and you are unable to unhide those files/folders, you can use Disk Heal to restore access.

Finally, the program has a whole host of tweaks that you can configure, such as Security tweaks, Appearance tweaks, IE tweaks, and Control Panel tweaks.

tweak windows

Under Security tweaks, you can configure some of the following settings:

  • Enable/Disable Task Manager
  • Enable/Disable the registry editor
  • Lock the location of My Documents
  • Enable/Disable Shutdown
  • Remove the Manage option in My Computer Context Menu

For Appearance tweaks, you can change the following settings:

  • Change drive icon
  • Hide/Show the left panel from My Computer
  • Hide/Show the current user in the Start menu

For IE tweaks, you can lock the current home page if you don’t want others to be able to change it, enable or disable auto-complete and increase the number of simultaneous downloads.

For Control Panel tweaks, you can basically hide or show any of the Control Panel applets like Add/Remove Programs, Network Connections, Power Options and more.

Overall, this program is useful if you had a virus and cannot open your hard drives in Windows any more. If you want good programs to tweak Windows, check out MZ Vista Force, a free program to tweak Windows Vista, or Tune-Up Utilities. Enjoy!
