Backup Outlook, Outlook Express email using Amic Email backup

Backing up my Outlook email has probably been one of the smartest things I’ve ever done in my life. I have well over 25,000 email messages from friends, family, and colleagues that, if they were to be lost, would be a terrible loss to me personally. Like me, most people’s emails contain lots of sentimental value, including important conversations or memorable chats.

That’s why I backup my emails on a regular basis to an external device, in my case a portable hard drive. If my computer hard drive crashes, I can rest assured that I will have a copy of most of my emails. However, backing up your Outlook email manually is a time-consuming process and not very easy since you have to find the PST file in some obscure location in your Windows profile and then copy it off.

So wouldn’t it be nice if you could use a free program that would automatically create backups of your email on a regular basis? You can check out a cool freeware app called Amic Email Backup that creates backups of email from nine different popular emails clients, not just Outlook.

Amic Email Backup is cool because it can not only backup your email database, but it can also backup address books, settings, mail and news accounts, message rules, blocked senders lists and signatures all to a single, compact, compressed backup file that can be easily restored when necessary.

Amic Email Backup supports the following email clients for automatic backup purposes:

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsft Outlook Express
  • Eudora
  • Netscape Messenger
  • IncrediMail
  • PocoMail
  • Pegasus Mail
  • The Bat
  • Opera Mail

Unfortunately, it does not support ThunderBird yet, so if you’re using Thunderbird for your email client, you’ll have to use a different program like MozBackup. In the program, you can choose which identities or profiles to backup and which data from those profiles should be backed up (i.e. account settings, rules, etc).

On the Restore tab, you can use Amic Email Backup to restore your email on a different computer. So if you want to migrate your email from one computer to another, you can use Amic to do so. Note that Amic Email Backup does not let you backup from one email program and restore to a different email program, they both have to be the same email client.

Other options include the ability to password-protect the email backups for security purposes and the ability to schedule the backups to run on a regular basis. You can also specify how many backup sets you want to have and Amic will automatically overwrite the oldest one once it has created the last set.

Finally, you can go into the options and specify that the backup file be split into multiple files if it’s too big to fit onto your backup media. That’s a nice feature considering the size that some email boxes can grow too if you’re a power user.

Overall, it’s pretty useful program for quickly and easily backing up your email. Hopefully it supports more email clients in the next release as Thunderbird is quite popular! I had also written a post way back about how you can write a script in Windows to automatically backup your email. Source: Ghacks
