Analyze hard disk space usage

Want to free up some hard drive space on your computer? If you tons of files and folders on your computer and you have never run any kind of cleaning utility to clear out temp files, etc, you could have a lot of space that is being taken up by files you no longer need.

That’s where it becomes REALLY helpful to use a program that can tell you exactly how big every folder is on your computer, sorted by size. You can then instantly find out the biggest space mongers and delete duplicate files and other unnecessary junk.

Earlier I had written about a cool program called TreeSize, which is a free utility to view hard drive space usage in Windows. There’s another cool program that does this for you, but also includes fancy charts and graphs, if you like that more.

FosiX Lite allows you to visualize your hard disk space usage. You can browse though your hard drive by clicking on the bars in the chart. You can also view the data storage in a tree view structure if you like.

Fosi basicaly will scan a specific directory, drive or everything connected to your machine, including external USB drives or network drives. As it scans, it computes the size of all the directories and presents it to you in a navigable pie char, bar chart, or tree.

You can also open the folder directly from the program and delete or move folders also. You can even export the data out into XLS, CSV, or HTML format.

It can also be used to quickly delete all of your temporary Internet and application files, kind of like CCleaner.

Overall, it’s a cool program for drilling down into your hard drive disk space usage. I like both TreeSize and Fosi, but there are many other programs that do something similar, such as WinDirStat, a free disk usage statistics viewer. Anyone else use a different program?

I use SpaceMonger 1.4 - the last free version — it’s a single EXE so I can carry it around on my USB toolstick. Old SpaceMonger v1.x is here: http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php

Yet another one is SizeMeNow ( http://www.ketara.ca/folder-sizes-disk-space.html ). It needs .NET 2.0, though, but has very nice charts.
