ALZip, a WinZip alternative

ALZip is an archive and compression tool that supports more than 30 archive formats. You can use this utility for compressing files to reduce their size. You can also use ALZip to create a self extracting archive and a password protected archive, this is useful in securing your data.

Other alternatives to WinZip that I have mentioned in the past include 7-zip, Jzip. Also make sure to read my comparison between 7-Zip and WinZip.

Trivia: The AL part in ALZip is a transliteration from the Korean aljip literally EggZip. Other ALTools feature similar egghead cartoon characters as mascots for each program.

To create an archive click file or the new icon. In the pop up window, navigate to the file or folder you want to archive. After you have selected your files for archive, type the filename of your archive then browse the location where you want it to be saved.

Select the type of archive you want then click add.

Your new archive will be created in the folder you have specified.

If you want to create a password protected file, follow the first step and click the password button. Enter your desired password then click ok.

Notice the + sign after the file, this means that the archive is password protected.

To create a self extracting archive, open the archive you want then click Actions then select ALZIP Self-Extractor (EXE) or press CTRL+X. Type the filename of your self extracting archive, check the Auto-extract checkbox then click ok.

The self extracting archive will be created in the folder you have defined.

    Why in the world would you want to use this program for zipping files, when you can use 7-zip! It’s way better and is definitely a lot more user friendly. Or if you want to spend money, get WinRAR.

    Another good zip program is jZip. Not as popular as WinZip, 7-Zip and WinRAR, but it still does a good job. Any comparison of WinZip to 7-zip?
