iComment – Turn any web page into an online discussion board

Posted on May 5, 2008 at 5:01 am

If you take a look at the bottom of this blog post, there is a comment section that acts like an online discussion board to allow web readers to voice their opinions, views, criticisms etc. Each day, a huge number of people leave comments on websites and blogs which are, in my opinion, a good way to build a more knowledgeable society.

The problem is that some websites out there does not have a proper commenting system, which makes it troublesome for users to share their views on a particular issue. Therefore, iComment offers a free solution that can turn almost any web page into an online discussion board.

iComment is a browser plugin that allows you to add, read, edit and share comments on any particular web page. All you need to do is to download iComment and install it into your computer. The only thing that iComment will add to your browser is an all-in-one toolbar button that won’t clutter your browser’s interface.

How iComment works is pretty easy – you can add comments to a web page by clicking on the iComment button on your browser’s toolbar and select “Add Page Comment“. Next, type in your thoughts, give your comment some simple formatting (bold, italic etc.) if you wish to and click OK.

Comments left by any users will be displayed as tiny, little minimized icons on the right side of your browser. You can click on the icons to read other user’s comments, reply to any comments made, edit your comments and more. If you have previously comment on any blog or websites before, using iComment will comes naturally to you.

iComment Features

  • Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox compatible add-ons.
  • Site Comment – leave your thoughts or views that summarize a whole page / site content. A site comment icon will always appear on top of other types of comment.

  • Text iComment – highlight a text, right click and choose “Add Text iComment” to leave a comment on a specific text inside a web page.
  • Picture iComment – highlight a picture and choose “Add Picture iComment” to leave a comment on a particular picture inside a web page.
  • Use the search function at the iComment homepage to find comments by other users gathered from comment’s global access database. For example, you can search other user’s comments on the Apple phone to learn more about the product before buying it.

  • Vote a comment – you can also play an open role as an iComment moderator and vote on a particular user’s comment as useful, useless, spam or offensive.
  • Build your own community – you can send a message to fellow commenters, learn more about them via their profile and more. You can also click on any username to view all comments leaved by a user.
  • Turn iComment on and off whenever you want.

Like any community based tool out there, iComment thrives based on the number of people that use it. The more people that use iComment, the merrier it will be. I love the fact that it is very easy to use and provides an alternative, quick online discussion board for websites that does not have a place for web users to voice out their thought via commenting. Try and invite your friends to use iComment today!
