WikiFortio - Free easy to use file sharing service

Here’s another site that I have found recently that I like, a free file sharing service that’s simple and fast. WikiFortio is probably my favorite file sharing site up to now. It’s absolutely simple and works very well. The web site has just one button and three links, so there aren’t any rules to read and there’s no registration.

Just click Browse, choose your file and you get a very nice progress screen showing you how large your file is, how much has been uploaded, the time left and the current upload speed.

Once it’s uploaded, now you can pick your options as to what you want to do with the file. There are two ways to download your file: use the ID of the file and go to the main page of the web site and type it it, or use the direct link to the file, which you can email to yourself or someone else. You can also store the file anywhere from 1 hour up to 99 days, which is a lot longer than most other file sharing services I have seen. Another nice feature is that you can password protect your file in order to make sure no one can download it unless they are given the password first.

The last thing that you can do on WikiFortio (literally the only other thing) is to search for files that are stored on their servers. Of course, this means if you upload a file without a password, others would be able to search for it and hence could download it. So make sure you protect it with a password if you don’t want it to be publicly visible.
An interesting thing you can do on the search is type in something like doc or ppt and you’ll get a list of all the Word documents of PowerPoint presentations stored in the system. You can also search the description field if it was filled out by the uploader.

Overall, a really simply yet useful file sharing service. By the way, the upload time was fairly quick for me even with a 5MB file, it took less than a minute (on Broadband).

Have you seen izimi (http://www.izimi.com). Its photo/video/music/doc/anyfile sharing service is totally unlimited (any size, any quantity, any file type), plus there is no need to upload your files to ANY server before they become available, they just sit right there on your own PC and are available for you to embed into other websites in the normal way.
You just right click on any file and izimi instantly gives you a URL, link code (and embed code for embeddable files) which you use just like you were using flickr, photobucket, youtube, yousendit, etc, etc. You can literally make hundreds of files shared in a few seconds, either privately to just your mates or publicly to anyone. Then you can access them from anywhere with just a web browser. Its very cool.
David, that is excellent! Thanks very much for the info! I’ll be sure to update this post with info about izimi.com.
The only thing about the site is that your computer acts as the file server, so that’s a significant difference since your computer has to be on at all time and it will use up some computer resources also.
Appreciate the comment!
Thanks David for a better alternative!
A curious feature about Wikifortio is that although there are many upload features, there is no apparent way to delete your file ahead of time once it’s uploaded.
