Viddler - Upload videos in high-quality full resolution and share videos online

Posted on January 9, 2008 at 7:06 am

If you’re like me, you’ve been posting most of your homemade videos to online sharing sites like YouTube, Metacafe, Google Videos, etc and that works fine for most of us. However, you probably also noticed that if you have a high quality video, it is often reduced in size and quality tremendously. Also, there aren’t that many privacy options and it’s a pain to try to download a video to your hard drive.

Viddler is a new and creative web app that lets you upload, enhance, and share your videos online quickly and easily without installing third party software and for free! Viddler is great for bloggers or anyone who creates videos or screencasts that they want to share with their viewers in high quality.

Uploading a video is a piece of cake with their flash-based uploader, which lets you queue up as many videos as you want! The only restriction they have for video files is that they are less than 500MB. While the video is being uploaded, you can give it a title, description and add tags.

You can “tag” it in several ways: global tags, which are used to describe a video as a whole (like “Trip to Texas”, etc), Timed Tags, which are attached to specific moments in a video and describe what is going on in that moment (like “dog barking” or “woman running”), and User tags, which describe attributes or characteristics unique to that user (like “athlete”).

They currently support the following file formats: AVI, DV, MOV, QT, MPG2, MPEG2, MPEG4, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, ASF, WMV, and FLV. In future versions of Viddler, they will support music and picture formats also!

Viddler has some other cool features, like the ability to post comments at specific moments in a video. That means your comment won’t appear until you the exact moment in the video.

You can of course embed the videos onto your blog or website and the quality is superb (if you recorded at a high quality). Check out this training video off of their site

Now that’s what I am talking about! Crystal clear and no graininess! You can also email videos or copy a direct URL link to the video. When sharing videos, Viddler has some of the finest control options, including the ability to make a video public, share it with only friends and family, and who can comment, tag, embed, or download your videos.

Finally, once you have a video up on their servers (and you have unlimited storage space at this time for media files), you can get a whole slew of stats on your videos, including number of comments, number of times played, number of viddler and embedded plays, number of views, etc.

Viddler gives publishers the option to make their videos downloadable also. If someone does download it, they get the original full resolution version, not a compressed or reduced version!

One other thing, if you don’t already have a video to work with, you can use Viddler to record yourself using your webcam and posting it online automatically. No third party software is needed to record using your webcam!

Overall, Viddler is an awesome way to upload and share videos online! It has a lot of cool features that make it more fun than YouTube. Definitely worth checking out. Source CyberNetNews

Great, so I can upload a 10 second video of anything I want!

I thought 500MB was about 5X what is allowed on YouTube, so I’m having trouble understanding the comment about 10 seconds. Am I missing something

Klein, for me a 500 MB video from my digital camera is right around 10 minutes. It’s not huge, but definitely better than 10 seconds.

Now if you’re talking about an HD camera at 1080p, well maybe you’re right!

Hugh, you’re right, it’s still better than YouTube!

Were you able to successfully record through your browser? I tried but couldn’t get it to recognize my audio settings (using the built-in microphone on my MacBook Pro) though the iSight worked fine.

Yeah Klein is a moron. A 10 second video would be about 500KB, which is about 1000th of 500MB.
