Use Numbr if you want a disposable phone number for free to use on community sites

Here’s a very cool web site that I ran across on while using StubleUpon called Numbr. Numbr is basically an self-expiring free anonymous phone number that you can have forward to your cell or home phone. Callers cannot see your personal cell or home numbers, just the anonymous number created by the service. The great thing about the whole concept is that it’s free, it takes about 30 seconds to get your number, and it works instantly!

You can get a temporary number anywhere from one hour all the way to one month. If you want to keep a number beyond a month, there is a new feature called “Manage my numbr” that allows you to re-activate your number. Also the “numbrs” are unique and will not be re-used. Numbr was actually named “Craigsnumber” earlier as it was meant to be used to create temporary numbers for individuals posting items on Criagslist. However, because the company started growing so fast and people began using the service as a social networking tool, they decided to change the name to Numbr.
Once you’re at the site, click “Get your FREE numbr”

After a few moments, you’ll get a random number followed by an extension. This is how they can ensure that numbers are not reused. Another person might get the same number, but a different extension. If you want a number in your area code, click “Want a number in your area code?” and choose a city from the list (currently there are only 23 cities listed! My hometown of New Orleans is listed also!).
Next choose the desired duration for your temporary number. Next type in your mobile or home phone number where you would want the calls sent to. You can also click “More call control options” to do things such as block telemarketers, email your incoming call history, set a Do Not Disturb time period, or activate voicemail for missed calls.

Once you’re done setting your options, click Submit and you’ll now have your activated anonymous number! Numbr also provides you with HTML code for your number so you can post it on Craigslist. It even has code for a widget that you can put in your Blogger or MySpace profiles.

I just tried it out and I have to say that it’s pretty sweet! It’s free, anonymous, and has a decent set of features. Give it a shot!
