How to update and refresh your Windows Experience Score in Vista.

Vista included a new feature called the Windows Experience Score. This feature essentially scans your computer and comes up with scores for various hardware components. Memory, Video Card, Audio, etc. Then after scanning it give you a number for your Windows Experience. If you have a score lower than what you want, you may want to upgrade certain hardware. To access the score just right click Computer and select Properties.
I recently reformatted my hard drive and never did get around to refreshing my score. Doing so is pretty straight forward, but in case you have never done it, here is how. Here you can see I have an incredible rating of 1.0! Because it is Unrated I click on the Windows Experience Index: Unrated hyperlink.

This brings me to a new dialog where I click the Refresh Now button. As you can see Windows never rated my graphics card.

While windows recalculates the experience score you will see a progress bar and it will tell you what is being tested.

All done! Thankfully my score is much better than 1.0. You will want to update or refresh this score any time you upgrade any hardware that directly affects performance on your system. Currently I believe the highest score achievable is 5.9.
