Search Twitter, download Twitter tools, and find Twitter users

Twitter is a very popular micro-blogging service that basically allows people to send and recieve short (140 character) updates to those who are following them. Lately, it’s become way more than just a way to know what your friends are up to, it’s used for everything from getting the latest news on a particular topic to finding a new job!

Depending on how many people you follow and how many people follow you, Twitter can be something very powerful for some people. However, you need to have the right friends and you need to have the right tools in order to make Twitter truly useful.

Just Tweet It is a cool website where you can find other Twitter users like yourself and connect with them. They basically have a Twitter directory, whereby users can add themselves, their Twitter URL, and a brief description of themselves and their interests.

So if you are looking to follow the tweets of other bloggers or filmmarkers or graphic designers or writers or people interested in sports, politics, or medicine, you can just browse the Tweet Directory! There are close to 50 categories to choose from in the directory already and it’s growing fast!

You can then browse all the Tweeters in that category and follow them if you like their bio. It’s also moderated for spam, so there are practically zero fake people listed in the directory, only real people promoting themselves or their services.

What I really like about the site is that you can really find people who match your interests quickly. They also have a search at the top right, but it sucks right now. I was hoping that instead of reading through 500 bios, you can just search for “Wordpress designers” or “health experts”, etc, but it seems like it does not index that info as of yet! I’ll be making that request!

Other than the directory, they also have a bunch of Twitter tools and services that you can use to make your Twittering more useful. Click on Twitter Tools and they have Browser add-ons, Desktop Twitter apps, Developer tools, Twitter apps for Linux, Mac, Wordpress, and Twitter search programs.

Click on Twitter Mobile and you can find apps that will allow you to tweet from your mobile phone, Blackberry or your iPhone! They also have a nice list of Twitter blogs and Wikis that go in-depth on how to use Twitter personally and for your business.

Overall, it’s a great Twitter resource site and definitely addictive if you enjoy connecting with other Twitter users. If you’re new to Twitter, you can read my comparison of Twitter, FriendFeed, Pownce, Plurk and Jaiku.  Enjoy!

Is it possible to receive twitter updates via email? Not @direct tweets but standard tweets from people you follow? It is cheaper for me to use twitter using email rather than with sms.

Very Nice I love twitter and use it regularly but finding people with comon interests can be a bit cumbersome, loving the twitter directory.

With Twitter, you generally follow people you know or at least have heard about from others, but that limits your social circle. Twellow attempts to change how you find people to follow by indexing all the publicly available messages floating around the twitter network into searchable categories.

Twellow’s website is laid out so you can click on a category and it will display all the members that have expressed some interest in that particular subject. In addition, Twellow also provides a search box for more free form searching.

    Happy Twittering… Cheers Matt
