  3. Find more personal information on people through deep web searches

In a previous post, I talked about how you can find information on a person, such as their address, phone numbers, date of birth, email address, etc, mostly factual information about a person. That’s fine and great, but that doesn’t really tell you anything very personal about the person, like their political views, where they work, what web sites they like, etc.

Spock is a people search engine launched recently that is trying to collect data on people from all across the Internet, i.e. blogs, Wikipedia, photo sharing sites, social booking sites, and social communities like FaceBook and MySpace to create online profiles of people that can be searched by anyone! Whether this is good or bad for the regular person can be debated, but it’s certainly becoming a major new form of search that will be used by employers, co-workers, friends and family!

Performing a search on a person brings up a complete suite of information and links, including tags related to the person, related people, pictures, a short biography from Wikipedia, and links from all over the web. Searching for Bill Gates, for example, show 80 tags like Microsoft, college dropout, Windows, philanthropist, billionaire, etc. As for links, there is the Bill and Melinda Foundation, BBC profile, biography on Microsoft.com, links to Forbes and NYTimes stories, links to pictures of his house, and many more.

Of course, people with more “celebrity” status will have more information listed, but Spock also lets you “Claim” your profile to add your own tags and other subjective information. Spock double checks your email address off other social networking sites to make sure profiles are not hijacked by others.

The other cool feature of Spock is related people , which tries to find people by relationship. For example, Bill Gates’ friend is Warren Buffet, his co-worker is Steve Baller, the co-founder for Microsoft is Paul Allen, etc. This keeps a social networking aspect to Spock also. Very interesting and another useful way to find information on people.
