Race Your Favorite Web Site’s Loading Times
Posted on September 4, 2010 at 5:57 am
Competition is a part of of the human experience. We race cars to see who can build and drive the fastest car. We race horses to see who can breed and train the fastest horse. We even race ourselves to see who can run the fastest. It was only a matter of time before someone found a way to race Web sites.
WhichLoadsFaster.com is the proverbial ruler upon which to measure any Web site’s loading prowess. The site first loads with a list of some of their favorite site races, along with the option to try your own matchup.
For our first round of races, we clicked the Google vs. Bing link on the splash screen. Bing loaded 6% faster at 522 ms versus Google’s snail-like 555 ms.
Next, we raced Online-Tech-Tips.com with Ebay. Unfortunately, Ebay beat us by 224 ms.
Of course, we demanded a rematch, which is done by clicking the Repeat link at the top of the page. This link allows us to do a best out of race, where we can reload the pages an infinite number of times to decide which one reigns supreme. We chose to reload the pages ten times.
Unfortunately, we were displeased by the results. Ebay beat us, every time.
Ego blows aside, the site does offer a useful service for comparing how fast your Web site loads in comparison with the competition. Obviously, if your site is much slower, you might consider lightening the load by removing or resizing graphics.
Worst case scenario, it may be time for a new, faster host. If nothing else, the site provides at least a few minutes of entertainment.

I’ll compare my own site with this web site. Thank you for sharing.
Very nice website. I beat my competitors website every time
Racing computers, like racing automobiles, can be both a form of entertainment and a contribution to ‘improving the breed’; but, also, like automobiles, one must not become obsessed with how fast their computer is. It is of no concern to you that your daily driver automobile will not run with the professional race cars and, likewise, it should be of no concern to the typical computer user that their computer takes a few milliseconds longer to load a webpage than a professional developer’s specialized computer. Since a human’s reaction time is measured in tenths of a second, a few thousandths of a second becomes quite insignificant.
Another problem solved while browsing your pages! One of my websites was taking ages to load and now I know why thanks to this article and the link to “Which Loads Faster” I have been able to identify the plugins that were responsible and de-activate them
Thanks again for another Gem!
